View Full Version : Speed Modeling Challenge #229 - Futuristic Travel and Transportation

Waves of light

Rules:

Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger. (For wireframe help go to: http://www.artssphere.com/plugins/polygoncoloring.php)
LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's.

This week's topic: Futuristic Travel and Transportation

In the news this week, Elon Musk's outlines his plans for a future underground rail system that uses only solar energy and can transport people across America in less than 45 minutes. The Hyperloop may just be a pipe dream, but I love this sort of design and the detail, including the hand-drawn artwork and 3d/cg shots.

So, this week’s challenge is to model something to do with futuristic travel and transportation. It can be the method of transportation itself, e.g. rail, car, bike, aircraft, time travel pod. It can be a construction used to assist methods of futuristic transportation e.g. futuristic bridges, lifts, stations, docking ports, networks, washing/cleaning centres. Or, it can be something linked to futuristic transportation, something that accompanies travel e.g. sleep pod, pet pod, hyperchair, futuristic luggage, gadgets (futuristic alarm to get you up on time for your journey).

Did I mention that it had to be ‘futuristic’, lol.

Modeling time: 120 mins

Deadline: Wednesday, August 21th, 2013, 22:00 G.M.T

To kick us off, here are some ideas/designs:

Nice one.
I watched Despicable Me the other day and was really impressed with the way they did cars and flyers.

Must find a couple of hours..............

Nice topic! And the perfect excuse to dust off my old Larry Shultz spline-modeling video. From what I can tell from those idea/design images, the future is looking quite curvy indeed.

Another one of my favourites (sorry, bit of Pixar, Dreamworks, Illuminations fanboy - it's what comes with having kids and doing 3D/CG). If you get the chance to see Despicable Me 2, go see it.

Spline-modeling - man, haven't touched that in ages, but yes, if you're going for futuristic it tends to be curvy!

Great find Kuzey. Love the development of the minions. Would give my right testicle to work on a project like that, sit with your kids at the cinema and go 'I made that'. Yep, I see a 'despicable' future competition on the cards.

I thought I had configured all my menus & then realized I hadn't..spent 20mins looking for things like thicken etc.

And re-did that car nose a few times, that's what happens when you don't plan things out before hand :)

Here's an entry that's not related in any way to Despicable Me... It's a first-class seat for a tourist spaceship. I used LW 11.6 and LWCAD. It took 2 hours for modeling and 1 hour 35 minutes for texturing and rendering.

Nothing Fancy here - Just some good ol' slice and extrude of a box, and then letting QuadPanels do it's stuff. Actually only 20 minutes modeling time, another hour and a half for quadpanels to run. Geometry around the nose is sucky, needs some tweaking. Overall, though, it turned out OK for a rough and ready model.

Not long now until I have to pick a winner, but loving the extra entries. I became so busy this week that all I've managed to do is a quick sketch of what I was wanting to model. Bad competition creator, must try harder next time.

Where do I begin in finding a winner of this despicable futuristic challenge...

Kuzey - DM Car - Nice, within the timescales, missing a little detail, but we know that was down to a config mishap ;)
Jamesxx - Comic style mobile vehicle - love the tree garden on top - presumably to pull in power from the sun? But the red toxic exhaust fumes look worrying!
Kuzey - Banana framed rocket jet pack suit - good example of detail within the timescales.
Jamesxx - Future 'hoverboard' - nice simple design, renders made it look spot on.
Iain - Continuing the rouge DM part of the competition, Vector's ship - Nice wires and render.
PixelDust - Futuristic Chair - man, that looks like one comfortable chair.
Jamesxx - Another despicable entry - Gru's airship - Very nice. The wires are excellent, as too is the render.
JoePoe - Futuristic DM bike - Very close to the concept artwork, shame it was overtime.
Jamesxx - Gru's airship - Again, nicely modeled and a lot of detail within the timescales.
Kryslin - Battlestar Achilleus - 20 mins of modeling and a nice little plugin called QuadPanels can yield some great results.
Jamesxx - Teleporter - Can't remember seeing this in Despicable Me ;) I want to see the final render where the egg turns into a chicken in the other portal!
ANS - Futuristic Jetbike - Nice concept and not a minion in site. Seriously though, that's going to be one hot seat once that engine kicks in, ouch.
XswampyX - Raven fighter jet - That's looking very Gerry Anderson there mate. Shame it was overtime.

And the winner is (even though it's his fault for all the DM content)....

Iain with Vector's ship - really nice clean entry.

Sorry to Jamesxx, who has to go down as having the most entries in a single competition and not coming out on top.

On with the next one!
