I have a client who wants lights shinning thru their logo. How do I go about creating this light that shines and flickers?

Are you talking about volumetric lights?

You could also fake what you see in that still you posted with cylinders.

Do you mean something like this light sweep? If so, that's using volumetric lights and LW makes them pretty easy to set up and use.

I recreated the 20th Century Fox intro with my company's logo using faked volumetric lights with cylinders plus real volumetric lights (the front light that is shined up on the logo).

Cylinders will render about a bajillion times faster too.

It would depend upon the desired result if the cylinder approach would work. If you want to have shadows in the beam created by geometry, as in Spinland's video, or this image:

working with a volumetric is the way to go. If the beam doesn't contact any geometry, the cylinder trick will work fine.

For sure, although back in the Bad Old Days, some people actually would sculpt the 'cylinders' into the appropriate shapes to ape volumetrics.

Not worth the candle nowadays.

I wouldn't go for the cylinder faking, as thin volumes renders quickly even in VPR.

"Thin volumes"?? Is there a way to start them out thin, before they hit anything?

I meant it is not a wide, spacious volume. Just single beams, not covering half of the scene.

Got it. Thanks guys. Drinks are on me tonight, fellas. Just go to your local bar, ask for a drink, DRINK IT, wait for the bartender to turn away, get up and run! RUN LIKE HELL!
