Hi, I just put up a short tutorial on YouTube dealing with the issue of connected edges in multiple UV maps. I have had so much pain in the past dealing with this issue and had always seen mention of the cut, paste and merge points technique, but was too dense to understand how to make it work. So this video is my way of documenting the technique and putting it out there.

Not sure if that's a little self defeating, point one partial uv-ing works just fine within one map as long as you keep the map name consistent throughout the process of mapping the parts and the point linking between the islands does not come into play as long as you select, generate and move entirely within polygon mode and not point mode. yes in such a work flow stray points may end up all over your uv map but a quick select all unweald and merge will usually clear them, but true cut and paste is a valid technique for certain operations
