Speed Modeling Challenge #223 - Computer peripherals
Rules:

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger. (For wireframe help go to: http://www.artssphere.com/plugins/polygoncoloring.php)
3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's.

Well.. here's the other end of my iphone cable :) I used up the full hour just having fun doing microscopic sub'd untill time was up

Does that count ?

what ?!? I totally missed that it was a 90minutes limit this time :o

and thanx Oedo 808, it's just occlusion shader with fast fresnel on rendered out with a hdri environment and then I used the ol'polygonColoring plug-in to get the wireframes :)

Here's a render with some simple materials on

This was my choice of peripheral in the C64 era. Much better than the bigger brother TAC2 (as long as your right-handed)! Used up all 90 mins. Sub'd holes are just like black holes; consuming everything including time itself...

Here's mine.

I wish I spent a bit longer on the initial key, but that's the difficulty with the speed modelling. How much time do you spend on individual pieces?

Overtime. I look forward to making his suit! :D

Nice wires on Liam there akaracquel, not sure how he'd look bent over sticking out of my computer. :D

@aka - I think he's violating the USB standard for external dimensions, but who cares when you can rip his head off :D. He reminds me of a character in the too-long lasting tv-show "Glamour". (Judging from the neck and up...) Cool peripheral I must say.
@XswampyX - I like the striped surface on the keyboard. Glossiness texture? Thx for your comment in the radio thread!

awesome models you guys !

Thanks. Great detail on yours. :D

The texture is done with the reflection channel, makes a nice change from using a diffuse texture all the time.

@swampy - oh, ok. Good to know. I liked the second angle better where you can see the rebellion logo. Nice

This is the worst case of bad design I've ever seen. Bad ergonomics and undescribably ugly. What where they thinking? 45 mins and I could'nt look at it anymore, so here it is:

Hi Swampy and you other LW Geniuses,

I've had a account here for years, and have only lurked, but I've decided it's time to step up my game and start using LightWave for real, so I'll be participating in the Speed Modeling Challenges for a while. Here goes nothin... :)

Started with a USB hub I found here: http://amzn.to/13AaNWO

115530

End result was about 2600 polygons. Would like your feedback. Thanks!

Hi NadaTooma and let me say welcome back, even if I joined the forums later than you. Feedback: The first thing that struck me was the shadows. I don't know what version of LW you have, but if you change the shadowmapped spotlights to dome-lights (v10+?) you'll have much nicer soft shadows. As usual at the cost of rendertime. There is a bunch of other solutions also - spinning light trick, GI, upping the shadowmap size etc. Regarding modelling, you have nice rounded edges wich takes some planning when modelling flat polys. (as opposed to subdivisions which takes some planning to get hard edges for instance). I also noticed that you had time to model the little cable reinforcement where the cable enters the plug. That's a nice detail to enchance the model.
I would love to see akaracquel's model plugged into your's ;D

@Slartibartfast - Big violation in sizing standards, everywhere. ..shhhhh, keep it a big secret, okay? It is only a conceptual prototype! Yes, we are looking for a good hub, there is hope! :D Can we use your joysticks for remote control too? We can promise good RSI cramp in hand, after 50hrs of use? On second joystick, especially!

Welcome, NadaTooma! I enjoyed your wires, a lot! They took me to a very happy place! Good on you!

@Slartibartfast I'm running the latest and greatest (v11.5.1). Thanks for the advice on the dome lights! Don't know why I forgot about those. I need to keep reading the docs on a regular basis I suppose. And using Rounder is a bit of a chore, eh? Hopefully in v12, it will support edge mode and be a bit more interactive.

@akaracquel Thanks! I appreciate it. Good to be here!

This thing kicked my butt!!

Nevertheless, seeing as how worse things are happening to butts on this thread ..... I will consider myself lucky!

A mouse without scroll-wheel or buttons of any kind!!

So I have been meaning to jump in on these challenges for a while. Think I bit off more than I could for my first shot time-wise. This is what I could get done on my Razer Taipan mouse in the 90min.

I may still finish it off later. We'll see. I feel pretty good about the start at least.

Sorry for the delay..I was going to go for the centaurpede...um..head-butt render..reminds me of rugby for some reason..hate the sport :)

Butt..(see what I did there)..I'm picking JoePoe's mouse for the nice curves.

ps. NadaTooma..welcome to the challenges, it's very addictive & you'll see yourself getting better with each challenge..always a bonus :)

Well done everyone!
