Speed Modeling Challenge #221 - Chess.
Rules:

http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr16/xXswampyXx/Chess_Banner_zps6b8fc9ff.jpg (http://s465.photobucket.com/user/xXswampyXx/media/Chess_Banner_zps6b8fc9ff.jpg.html)

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger. (For wireframe help go to: http://www.artssphere.com/plugins/polygoncoloring.php)
3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's.

This week's topic: Chess.

It's your move! :D

Modeling time: 60mins

Deadline: Wednesday, June, 19th, 2013, 22:00 G.M.T

Nice! I had made a chess board and pieces(except the Knight) when I first started to learn LW. Time to revisit it. Looking forward to this one and to see who will be the Chess Master! :D

I think everyone has at some time. The good thing is that they all use the same bases. :)

First attempt at (semi) soft surface subD, and first real attempt at dielectric. Ran over by two minutes, but I'm going to ignore that as I spent a good ten minutes trying to work out how to get Magic Bevel to do what I b****y well I wanted it to, not what it wanted to do!

You really don't want to see the mesh on this one, believe me!

edit :Now I look at it, it looks more like a lion than a horse! :D

I'd love to see it :)

Oh, alright then, as you asked nicely. :)

The eye is a horrible mess, but I ran out of time to tweak it. My main issue with this was paranoia. Got the rough mesh together, then started pushing points around, but ended up with lots of non-planar polys in the basic mesh. Yes, they are divided when subD'd, but it just feels so wrong! :D

Congrats with your first entry into squishy-land, Pinkmouse :) I like it!

>> but it just feels so wrong!

 I've felt that very intensely in my own experience of subD ~ ala "It's against my own bloody religion!" Have no idea if other CAD-style/old school tech-drawing or 'hands on' 3D people know what I mean by that ..but I doubt I'm alone with the feeling. It feels like I'm learning a very foreign new language ..but if aliens existed, i get the feeling it's a language they would probably understand more instantly, compared to something like English.

>> but ended up with lots of non-planar polys in the basic mesh

Yep... When I start to see that happening in my wires, I yell "Bloody Spare Point Garbages!" at them. It's their official name (inside my head). They are the mice who live inside what I call my "Lightwave Garbage Map". For a smoother mesh, I have to exterminate them (delete the unnecessary/extra points that make a poly non-planar & start doing other weird things as well). With that, i'm definitely talking about the pesky LW mice/pests, not the ones people might use as avatars! :D Can you see where they might be living in your wires? (I'm assuming you ran out of time) It took me a while before I could see them in my own journey.

A great part of the difficulty I had getting my head around subD ...was learning how to be mindful of the types of geo-garbage LW makes or leaves behind that I need to delete/clean/fix. I would love to see a wiki that's completely dedicated to the subject, but get the feeling it's connected to my own learning-style/needs which I've needed to document with visual examples & give them silly pet names to help me remember them. Plugins like CP_janitor & NormalCorrector will fix a lot of it, but not all of it. Like math, i need to understand the concept/story that lives at the heart of things and I never liked those plugin "formula" math teachers 8~

Anywayz, FWIW - it took me about 7 months before i could even begin to try doing what you've achieved, well done!

OK - i shut up now, back to Chess!

Hi

This looked like a really fun challenge so I thought I would give it a go. I modelled the King Chess Piece in exactly 1 hour and went a few minutes over making the chess board. Texturing, lighting and rendering took a lot longer

Hi...and went a few minutes over making the chess board.

Hmm. You went for a sprayed acrylic varnish, I'd have gone for a rubbed oil and wax personally. ;)

Thanks for the nice words akaracquel, yup, I too have a CAD/technical drawing background. :)

The horses face took like 50 min so I had to just throw a body and a couple of bunny-ears at him to make it in time :yoda:.

Not an entry, but I was modelling the building where I have my daytime job. I had an idea of printing it out in 3D. Anyway, since it's a tower I wanted to post it here :-).

A fantastic round of knights

Felt tempted to try a serious one but opted for simple-stupid/quick modeling, because i want to spend more time on developing skills inside layout ;) Here's the render including a knight & some pawns.

Ah well, I never got round to the Lewis model. Maybe I'll return to that when I get anything resembling spare time.
Great entries folks. Next challenge...................

If I never do another seashell it'll be too soon!! Took me 20 minutes to realize it's dependent on scale.... and not seashell scale (at least not the seashells I'm familiar with).

So the body took an just over the hour. Lets' just call him the Headless Sea-Horseman.

Well it's that time again.

Thanks to everyone for all the great entries some impressive results even with some animation thrown in! I hope you had some fun. :)

This weeks winner with a fantastic Knight is Kuzey. I'm just such a sucker for the smooth wires and excellent poly flow.

Well done all!

Very nice for around the hour mark indeed. Love it.

Thanks, It is a bit obscure, so it's not surprising it wasn't recognized. Dark Horse Comics produced Sergio Aragones' GROO (http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/scale_small/12/124613/3086937-groo+-+mightier+than+the+sword+%28sergio+aragon%C3%A9s%E 2%80%A6%29+v2000+001+%282000%29+pagecover.jpg) the wanderer. For the first couple series, Sergio designed the company logo. I tried to translate it to 3D, I think I did it pretty well.
