View Full Version : 3D-Coat v4 is released

3D-Coat 4.0 has been officially released with huge updates over the previous version. Here are some of the biggest new features.

Live Clay - This is a full set of sculpting tools allowing dynamic mesh density including ways to paint on more or less density where you need it, even applying decimation where you like with a brush.
Revised interface - The new changes to the UI include options for icons on all of the tool buttons, choose whether you want to have icons, just text, both text and icon, even the size of the icon. Many other changes will make your sculpting and texturing time easier and faster.
Painting - You can now paint emissive and colored specular in your textures. Painting is now also enabled directly on your sculpted mesh which can be directly exported or baked onto a lower poly mesh with UV textures.
New Pencil tool and Magic Wand for painting pixel art and making quick selections.
Spline drawing mode - This new mode allows you to create a spline on the surface of your model and used it for applying texture or sculpting
The Voxel Extrude tool allows you to select an area and then extrude or flatten it with razor sharp edges or soft curved corners.
Retopology on a model can now follow changes made to the original.
The Retopology room now has tools like Extrude allowing you to do basic polygonal modeling

3DCoat is an amazing package, and an amazing value. When I saw Phil's post on the v4 release, I immediately went an upgraded to v4 -- there was never any doubt in my mind I'd be upgrading, and using the v4 betas strongly reinforced that position. 3DCoat gave me my first steps into digital sculpting, and it still remains my "goto" sculpting, painting and "active" retopo environment. Though I have since added ZBrush, where functionality overlaps I still prefer using 3DCoat.

I've had my problems with 3DC but I'm downloading anyway since I really liked 3.5 PPP painting. I'm looking forward to the other rendering enhancements to get a better look at my textures before export.

Not to mention this prog is tons cheaper than body paint and mudbox.

I've been loyal 3D-Coat user since the earliest 3D-Brush pre-release beta, and the program just keeps getting better and better. It's still one of the best values in software ever, and I highly recommend it.

As far a being 'cheap', I think this latest release is only the second paid upgrade since the first realese six or so years ago, and my total investment is still only about half what the program costs now. I actually feel a little guilty about this but, IMO, even at full price the program is a bargain. :)

I was one of the lucky ones who bought v3 with an offered free upgrade path to v4. The process was automated and very smooth, too: just entered my current serial code and received a new code and download link seconds later.

One great thing about 3DCs pricing is that you only pay what the new features are estimated to be worth. So you're not paying for something you already had.

Nice vid. 3Dcoat is used a lot in japan. Probably because its very photoshop like. Adobe just dominates the marketshare with japanese studios.

Cool. A question for those who use it - I've already got Zbrush, is there a good reason to get 3DCoat too? What advantages does it have?
I've just bought a GTX680 for my MacPro, so the CUDA acceleration would hopefully be a benefit for me, though I hope Andrew moves it to OpenCL at some point (since I'm almost definitely gonna get one of the new MacPros when they are released!)

Personally ease of use. It builds on the tried and tested photoshop workflow so almost everything is layer based.
For me if I don't use it for a couple of weeks it doesn't get in the way of working the second I use it again. I can't say the same thing about other appz that have "unique" workflow. Blender has more powerful sculpting tools but its blender.
Not as powerful as mudbox or zbrush but if you're not into high frequency detail and micro quality resolution then 3dcoat can handle it.

I think there are a lot of things in voxel sculpting that zb can't do, such as the real time decimation in all of the Live Clay tools. I think the texture painting is far more robust and retopology is definitely more robust. I think a lot of current zbrush users sculpt there and then take it to 3DC for retopo. I'm not sure what zb has done with UV unwrapping but I really like the tools for that too, even painting on the uv map, then going back and changing the uv after the fact. Why not give the trial a go? It's unhindered for 30 days, after that some restrictions appear can still test it.

The 3DC pixel painting tools and the overall workflow for painting color, bump, spec and emmissive maps is outstanding. Zbrush is not nearly as flexible when it comes to painting maps, layering or displaying them in ogl or dx.

Whenever I tried to use the 3dc sculpting tools I got disappointed so I use what I know best in that regard, which is Zbrush and all Its sculpting goodness. I feel the same way about mudbox.
