I know it probably means a major rewrite of how vertex normals work in Lightwave but isn't it about time we caught up with the rest of the 3d apps out there and had edge smoothing?

Lightwave stands alone in that edge/vertex smoothing is controlled by surface smoothing values and not edge smoothing values within the object.

This causes problems with vertex painting and getting soft/hard edges on a model - and doesn't work great for game assets with one surface.
