I was in the mood to do something sci-fi and I chose this:

I've begun modeling the basic shape of the thing but when it comes to all those raised and recessed panels, would you model them or do you think this original model was made with maps? It's hard to keep the contours of the ship with all the extra geometry added but I want to eventually create a result that looks as good as the image at that link. Thanks for your help!

You can use normal maps, displacement maps w/ subD or just a high-density mesh, or go buy QuadPanels (http://www.liberty3d.com/2010/08/quadpanels-1-5/) which lets you create detail geometry super quickly.

Sorry about that! If you copy paste into address window it will work like that.

Thank you! I haven't done any work with normal maps yet so I guess I picked a good project to learn with.

Can anyone recommend a program or plugin to make the normal maps? I found Nvidia but I have a mac and it doesn't look like they make a version for Mac. I've also found an ok freebie called NormalMapr which works, but it doesn't allow me to create enough depth.

All of the really good normal map programs I've seen are windows-only, unfortunately. I, too, am a mac user. Aside from something expensive like ZBrush or 3D Coat, I'm not really sure what the options are.
