11.5 doesnt seem to be saving Parts (polygon groups) with .obj. I've changed all the settings in the obj preferences, but nothing.

Is there a fix for this? Am i missing something?

I've loaded the .obj's back into modeler to verify and the there are no Parts.

Thankx

I'm not sure but I think what you want isn't possible with obj. Isn't the parts stuff something for LW only?

Nope, I've used it all the time before 11.5.

Yes it has been broken for quite a while. I put a bug report on it last year. But I am not sure that Newtek even admits that there is something wrong. There have been several threads discussing this.

If you are trying to create poly groups in zbrush there is partial workaround. Cut your model up so that each part is a disconnected piece. Goz it to zbrush then you can create poly groups for the individual pieces. There is an option on the geometry panel to merge the disconnected points back together.

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear they have a QA procedure in place to make sure regressions don't slip in, even in areas as important as data interchange... :/ I logged a bug for LW11 that the .obj scaling factor on export is broken, and they are looking at that now. This is important for LWM->Maya exchange because frankly Maya is retarded when it comes to scene/object units...

I didn't realize that Parts would translate to ZB Polygroups, partly because ZB doesn't assign names to Polygroups (at least, if they do, it isn't exposed in the UI). So it seems like you would lose your Part naming when the mesh was brought back into Modeler. But I guess that depends on how LW implemented GoZ -- not sure. It would to great to have polygrouping preserved, though, so I hope it can be done.

I use parts when going into Poser. LW has supported that for a very long time..Not sure how they could have broken it..lol.

As for scaling, its always been hit and miss with different apps, specially Maya and Max.

Is there an alternative to the build in obj export / import?

In the build in one Scaling and Parts do not work (and the smooting is also messed up after obj export -> obj import - even if no third party software is involved).

As I am also trying to export to Poser and need to scale (LW -> Poser (set to meter) is 38,15%) and to apply SmoothingIDs in Poser,
I really like to have a working scale and parts (or something similar).

As it is now, I need to scale the object within LW then I need to import it into Poser, then I have to use the super user unfriendly polygon selection in Poser's Grouping Tool to set the smoothing IDs for different parts of the object (this step is really very annoying).

A tool that exports from LW in a way that I can select LW's parts in Poser's Grouping Tool would be very nice.
Could be free or commercial, as long as it just works better than LW native.

Iwanmtr,
maybe you know a way?

For now, I use LW 10 to export .obj for use in poser. It keeps the parts intact. Of course, scale when importing to Poser has always been hit and miss, but its not a big issue for me, since I can just scale it there to what i need.

Check out Sensei's TueArt plugins, he has a commercial LW obj importer/exporter which appears to preserve parts/groups. It may also sort out scale issues. I have same problems with workflow between zbrush/groboto -> Lightwave so intend to invest. As the Dev team are working hard on making LW play we'll with other apps, hope this is addressed soon.

This problem should be fixed by now. ;)

Mr Grandi,
that's not fair,
you have a fixed obj export / import
but we don't.

That's nice, but their value depends a LOT on whether they'll be in a free update for v11 customers, or part of a subsequent paid upgrade.

Did this get fixed in LW 11.5.1 or 11.6?

Lino... is there an answer?

11.5.1 had the fix, so does 11.6

11.5.1 still had some issues, in 11.6-prerelease most of them are fixed and only 1 issue remains which I think they will sort out for final release.

11.5.1 what was lingering?
Does Polygroup work from parts?

Yes, in 11.6 parts/groups/poly groups are working as they are supposed to, at import and export; there's some issues when importing .OBJs in 11.6 with the surface names when the smooting is indicated as "1" inside the .OBJ but I think it'll be fixed soon.
