Speed Modeling Challenge #212 - Zombie Apocalypse!

Rules:

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger. (For wireframe help go to: http://www.artssphere.com/plugins/polygoncoloring.php)
3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's.
*************************************************

This week's topic: Zombie Apocalypse.

Ok let's see how we would all prepare for a Zombie Apocalypse. What weapon would you choose? Baseball bat? Chainsaw? Shotgun? or would you just use one of these (http://nukezilla.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Head.png)
An extra 20 minutes to get that extra blood spatter into it.

Modeling time: 80mins

Deadline: Saturday, April, 13rd, 2013, 22:00 G.M.T

Have fun!

Here is what I would use to attack a zombie. A shotgun. Modeled within the time limit.113365113366

Handy tool there bellmore. Quite tricky to get shells round here, so I went for this....

Shells..... right, good point! But the nail bat (nice btw) will get stuck. You'll spend precious seconds trying to pull it out for the next swing. 8~

(i'm giving this way too much thought :screwy:)

80 minutes, still not done, but here we go anyway...

Yes, it's the M577 APC from Aliens. About 2/3rds done. Lots of Booleans and Pen work. Having problems with polygon coloring and trying to get lines, will post wires later.
I think I will finish this one, just because it's cool.

I took your comments on board JoePoe and came up with this...

http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr16/xXswampyXx/Zombe_Hammer_Small_zps9f15aa59.jpg

It's an apple corer welded/bolted to hammer, with a spring loaded quick release mechanism. I think that would do the trick. Tap 'n' go trepanning!

Over time, only because I had to redesign it many times.

And the wires for my APC...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v636/Kryslin/funstuff/Speed%20modeling%20Challenge%20Renders/smc_apc_wires_zps53df05e9.jpg
Like I said - nothing fancy, a lot of pen, Extrude, and Boolean work. Finding a decent set of references wasn't easy, either.

XSwampyX, seriously man, where can I find your website, tutorials, whatever? You consistently do great renders with awesome looking surfaces and I'd love to know your methods.

I agree. You are truly a master Mr. Swampy.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it. :D

I don't have a web site or tutorials sorry. Maybe one day.

Most of the techniques I use, have been learnt doing these speed models and browsing this forum.

I normally use a hdri as a textured environment. Jig the main light to line up (roughly) with the back ground image and use reflection/reflection blur with either normal maps or bump maps to get the surfaces.
The more you do, the better/easier they are.

Thanks again.

yeah, yeah.... master shmaster ;) :D. Let's talk zombies!

A brain corer!! I like it. It shows good improvisation, probably the most important anti-zombie weapon. Work with what you got.... and if you've got an apple corer.... :D.
And the spring load.... so important! Core in, core out. Still gotta get in there pretty close though :hey:.

By the way, I can do this all day. One of my closest friends is obsessed with this stuff. Most of the time I can't tell if she (yes SHE) is joking or absolutely serious.
She can spend hours planning her zombie escape route/weaponry etc. One of my favorite pass times is trying to poke holes in her strategies.
So I hope you'll don't mind that I've sort of indoctrinated you into my own inside joke.

Guns: yeah the ammo thing, but what about the noise, even with a suppressor. It's just like ringing the dinner bell. Or as I read the other day... "all guns are starting pistols for the "Chase the human" zombie marathon." :D

Let's see, what else, oh yeah the APC. Lol, well can't really argue with that. Fuel? That sucker's probably nuclear. Ammo, no idea. Only problem I can see is food supply. Maybe Swampy's got an apple for ya. But once you get out..... what's that!? A zombie..... No!! .... ALIENS!!!!!!

And finally an apology to Samoht VII. I've kinda hijacked your topic.... sorry.
Maybe I should be modeling something instead of yapping :).

Oh, Swampy.......
a) can't believe you actually modeled in the holes on the bat grip.
b) why so many cuts in the main box housing of the corer? Probably just remnants of the on-the-fly redesigning. (?)

a) Not too hard, Just a flat poly divided up into 3x2 squares, delete the middle bottom one. Array 32 copies. rotate to 45 deg. use the bend tool to twist them around. Heat shrink to the handle. Thicken to get your grip. 5 mins tops.
b) It's because it's hollow. They are clamped with 4 bolts that you cant see, to the apple corer. This leaves a nice clean hole for the erm 'material' to come out the top. So no stopping to clean it out, the chunks will pop out like a sausage on the next activation. 8/

Of course!! :foreheads  I just got through typing the same advice in the sofa thread. It's so easy to see it once you see it. (no shrink wrap for me as yet tho)

Aha! Knew there had to be somethin' going on.

Okaaaaay. :oye:. Be careful not to get any in your eyes or mouth!! See, I can't stop.... it's a sickness. :D

Re: The APC ... the engine according to the Aliens USMC tech manual is a multi-fuel gas turbine. Given the opportunity, I'd strip it out for a compact fusion plant, which would mean I could remove the fuel cell which powers the twin pulsed plasma guns (top turret). The M577 can carry twelve crew, and three days supplies. With the space savings from the engine and fuel cell system, one could be comfy for a few days, the only concern really being water. Strip out the command & control gear, and add a toilet and extra supply storage. Plus, you'd still have the weapons locker, and enough ammo for three days of continuous fighting.

Actually, my choice was from a webcomic, called the Whiteboard; Zombies breakdown the 4th wall of a 'neighboring' webcomic, and invade the domain of two tech happ mad engineering types... And they use an APC similar in design to the one from Aliens...

With a Zombie Apocalypse, you can't go wrong with one of these bad boys! :)

Took me about 40 minutes to model, then about an hour to setup the scene. Tried to use the bump to get some dents in it but every time I tried it looked like it had water on it, not dents. Oh well.

I have a couple more ideas I want to try and do.

Used about 60mins.
Really struggled to texture it. Gold is hard, well for me anyway. Almost used nodes for the first time but then bailed :P
Gotta go the 2 Golden Deagles for an apocalypse. At least I will go out in style.

I think your ok with your timing. Nice model, what is it?

That, my friend, is a serious slicer!! Two handed job. Keep your distance. Loppin" some heads. :D

In fact, I had my eye on modeling something similar. A little more retro, but the same idea. Back to the drawing board.

Edit: Hmmm, or maybe not so long. Those holes look like places to strap to an arm..... I think I've seen this somewhere (maybe).
but, the fact that it's over a surface of butterflies......

JoePoe

Although.....side note.... my friend "reminded" me today that even if you cut the head off it will still be "alive". Gotta destroy the brain. :oye:

5th attempt on just the blade itself within the allocated time, couldn't crack it (overtime).
@XswampyX - ...it's an upgrade from the previous vuvuzela mod. Can attach it to an air compressor if you don't need to be too portable, but couldn't get around to modelling a cork plug for the blow hole :D Loved your spring apple corer, genius

Nothing fancy here. Very low poly model, from one of my fave console games... Each band on the scale is 30cm, or ~1ft, so that thing's a little over 150cm/ 5ft long. Balanced, light weight, durable, and extremely sharp, it allows for a steady hacking rhythm without getting too tired...

Also modeled one-handed, while the other hand holds an ice pack in place (over some pulled teeth...)

I don't think I made it . At least I went down swinging.
55 min. So I might be back with the extra 25 :hey:.

Ok that's just about time up so lets see what we all have:
bellmore: Great start to the challenge and fair effort to get a shotgun completed. Looks great.
XswampyX: Wow. That bat looks awesome. You inspire me to get better.
Kryslin: Love it. Huge effort to tackle that in a speed challenge. I hope to see the finished product when you're done.
XswampyX: Damn dude....just damn...
WittyWop: That looks awesome. Would have been sick with the dents but what can ya do eh.
akaracquel: As always awesome. Very elaborate ways to kill Zombies. :D
Kryslin: I have always loved those oversized video game swords. Did them justice.
JoePoe: Last and definitely not least. That looks sick. Love the design, textures everything.

And the winner is......JoePoe!

So I think I am doing the next challenge (this week) as well unless someone else has an idea they want to use.

Nice models everyone.

First, my hat's off to JoePoe!

The real kicker on the APC was finding a good 4 to 6 view reference, and the wheels... and I still got them wrong.

Nice work everyone! Congrats Joe.

I really enjoyed this challenge, help me fight off the modeling block I felt I had.

I was able to make this guy in 80 minutes but just never had the time to get him posted. Good zombie home protection. :)

Looking forward to the next one!

Samoht if you're looking for suggestions South Park characters or Pokemon characters would be cool. Most are simple shapes so it would'nt be crazy difficult to get done in 90 minutes.

lol - I have one of those face guards living in the workshed. I'm usually using an axe when i need to wear it and know what motivates me to put it on, so... is the reason why i think it looks like there is a crack in that shield, a figment of my imagination? :D
