View Full Version : IGS to LWO or .OBJ?

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck converting a IGS (or IGES) file - some CAD format I am told, to a format that Modeler / Lightwave can read?

Any thoughts?

I've used STL's with decent results. Download Chrome Cow's SHM STL import/exporter for Modeler. Most solids base CAD apps can export STL's, so it's pretty straight forward. The STL's will need to be resized and possibly cleaned up they are in Modeler.

Cadloaders for Modo is off the hook! you get clean results, quads.

MOI is very good for doing IGES/STEP-to-lwo conversions.

Like Modo's CAD Loader, it also does quad output and saves directly out as an .lwo. There are a number of settings to control output densities.

I can't say what one of the two packages works best as I've seen issues with both. Neither are 100% seamless solutions, but both come close

There's one nice thing about MOI though... you also get a full featured nurbs modeler. :0)

There is also FreeCad

I've used MOI3D on a project where they couldn't provide FBX or OBJ. It works. But don't expect super clean models from its exporter. I had to flip a ton of polygons manually, and used the LWCAD 'Fix polygons' to help me fix some polygons that didn't render as nicely.

Don't know if that's normal for MOI3D or for any IGS files converted to something else. But it took a lot of time.

I have used both moi3d and the SHM STL import/exporter to convert to lwo with success from .stl files that have been exported from Autodesk Inventor. moi3d gives more export options. The other option is to use the more pricey PolyTrans which is great on very complex setups, but I haven't upgraded my old version as the previous mentioned export methods work fine for me at the moment.

I can also vouch for MOI to convert IGS/IGES files. Using the OBJ exporter, it can also export vertex normal maps which are extremely handy for complex surfaces with different smoothed surfs. I believe the LWO exporter in MOI doesn't export out a vertex normal map, whereas it's OBJ exporter does.

More expensive, but works with the charm, deep exploration, handles everything else dealing with cad conversion from likes like solidworks iges, sldasm, sldprt etc.
Far more slick and easier to use than polytrans, but more expensive.

I use Rhino (demo) to do things like that. Works really really well.

Thank you all for your responses! This is actually not something I need, but a friend was wanting a way to get these into LW. I think I might check out a few of these and then have him pay me for cleanup work in modeler. :-) Thanks for all your responses.

Had the same issue today, tried anything from maya(choked on 17 meg file) 3dsmax 2012( crashed after processing the file for around 4 minutes), cinema 4D(read the file well, but when exported the normals were compelete mess, tried obj, fbx, stl. Rhino is the best option for this type of work.

http://www.luxology.com/cadloaders/ Yes, we also recently acquired modo with Cadloaders and it does a really nice job.
