Thanks to everyone who gave me insight into heat shrink! I think I have a good procedure for cables now. Before twisting I apply a fairly low poly skin, nurb it, then twist it. Comes out great? Really weird how you have to increase the size of the geometry though, just to get it to work.

Actually, while I like tools that "just" work. There has to ba threshold of reasonable/responsible operation. 3D is doing some incredibly complex calculation under the hood, quite often for things that seem "simple" to us, and are not mathematically simple at all.
Every tool I have ever used IRL has constraints on it.

Steak knife, one side serrated. If I push (not saw) with the non serrated side, should I really be complaining that it won't cut steak? Demand a redesign, call it "not quite there"

I have suffered from this syndrome as well. Then I am reminded that if it is push button simple, plugin auto magical, then you really don't need me...
