Hi there,

just uploaded a new tutorial, german only sorry, tried to dub it, but it just does not work. If enough interrest, i'll re-record it in english, its about the ABF UV unwrapping and the problems you can run into and their solution.

German: Lightwave 11.5 ABF UV Unwrapping und die Probleme auf die man stossen kann, inkl. Workaround.

Don't know about you, but youtube as been going quite of fail today. Most vids tell me to try again later. Same thing with you guys?

Will check it when it allows me.

Thanks

Thanks for the video, very educational.

It makes me wonder if there's a plugin/script that'll align a UV island based on aligning a point selection. I've seen ones that line up a string of points but on a complex UV island that's not so helpful.

off_topic:Apparently it works fine on Chrome... seriously 2 computers and it failed on firefox. Who to blame? :S

PLG fixes most of those.
It unwraps with ABF then it relaxes, and you can apply more relaxation afterwards. Relaxation more important to organic meshes that the Unwrap method, since in the end with relaxation they look the same.

The alignment is a bit harder. PLG has Align Charts Dir which will automatically do it, but sometimes it's not that direction it chooses you want. This would be easily tackled if UV space allowed the tools the 3D space does. When I get very picky about these things sometimes I use UV2Morph solutions to align things how I want in the 3D Space and then generate the UV from there and then delete the morph.
Another way I use to aling is also using relaxation. I rotate the Island I want to a good aparent position, Select and align the vertices in the symmetry axis of the topology and then with them selected I run PLG Relax, It will relax the other around the aligned vertices.

Too lazy to make a video now :p

And yes most times it's safer to do the parts you want to redo from scratch instead. Or at least Unweld and Merge all vertices so that the stray ones you were getting go away.

Thanks for sharing.

ah, abe ich kanst nich sprache Deutch sehr gut... :]
so English is great, but any video is a nice watch... thank you! \ :]

(btw, someone talked about UVs and morphs, kinda related > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wvv6LhurzOs)

I prefer not to leave Modeler and have a relaxation related to the actually 3D spacing of the mesh and not just a dynamic symm ;)
I would do the border points differently, they look like they could slide along to be more relaxed.

I really wanted a 3D space relaxation tool :(

Cheers

Not in the UV space.

They just need the space they need, not necessarily even since density of incoming loops is not even too.

anyway, good tip on open holes ;)

true, not in UV space.

btw, ABF looks to work pretty good on full body creatures as well...

I think they should provide the clock while the ABF UV unwrap is calculating. Objects with big poly count can take a lot of time and I donīt know if it is working or not.
A way to stock the edge selection would be great too, just like PLG does.
And for last, I donīt know if it is possible, but would be great to generate the maps by surface too.
