View Full Version : Pixar Lamp rig

Does anybody know if its possible to rig this lamp so it moves like a real world lamp. I have seen characters that had each body part on a different layer and IK worked in that situation. I have tried to put each part on its own layer. I cant get the IK right. Thanks for any help.

ofc... its pretty simple really. Ideally... use bones and solid weights (messing with layers/pivots is a pita). To get reliable IK you want to break the structure down into simple lengths (triangles for 2bone IK will be easiest), and build the rig piecemeal in that fashion.

It is a fairly popular item. Try Google for some links.

It is going to be a tad more complex than just using IK. You'll probably have to use constraints and maybe even expressions to get it to work.

This tutorial looks real good. It is in 3D Max but he covers quite in depth the theory behind it and can probably easily convert it to LightWave:

There is no scene... I just drew on the OPs pic to show where to place chains (actually, if you look round it, you'll find there's a couple different possible configurations... its all about finding "action triangles").

Actually screw it... it only takes 5 mins to setup. Attached.

Nice Rig.

Actually in that 3D max example tute it is only one IK chain and the rest is constraints. That seems like a fairly stable way to go.

I like the controls he has set up for this. Blender does have nice rigging and anim tools. But you should be able to do something similar in LW.

Actually, Im sure with a bit of care and knowing ur way round, you could do this with a single (albeit branched) chain in LW too... but for those less familiar its often most helpful to break mechanical problems like this down into "sub-rigs".
