View Full Version : Bend object with a spline in modeler

I have a metal rod that I need to bend along the curature of a human spine. I thought I saw somewhere that there is a way to draw a spline and use that spline as a guide to deform your object with but can't remember how to do it. (Too much holiday egg nog.)

Any help would be appreciated.

Spline Guide works. Forgot to go into Numeric and swich it to bend. I had it on scale and couldn't figure out what the heck was going on.

You can also draw a curve and put it in a BG layer and use that with Spine Guide under "get curve".

LW has a lot of hidden gems that don't necessarily load into the menu layout automatically, aren't well enough documented, and are rarely mentioned in tutorials and other training material. I'd never heard of using "get curve" with Spline Guide until Surrealist mentioned it yesterday. Newtek could do itself a huge favor by addressing our knowledge gaps.

So true... I just wonder why dont we have splineIK in layout if this tool exists. I dont think that adding animation feature is a big deal but of course
development supposes some kind of strategical thinking. But I trust now Rob and Lino, things are getting brighter once again.

Will Spline Guide allow you to loop all the way around 180 degrees? I have a uv mapped rope that I'd like to bend in a controlled loop so that the two ends of the rope face in the same direction. When I attempt to use Spline Guide the rope follows the background spline half way, and then it abandons the curve and does a direct line to the end of the spline. "Y" axis, Operation "Bend", Make curve, Get Background Curve... Centers are default.
Or is there a better built-in method to do what I am attempting?

Unfortunately Spline Guide is limited in that way. If you want to bend your rope into a perfect circle the bend tool works great. Otherwise you could make a bone chain and bend it in Layout and then save transformed to get it back to Modeler.

Yeah, for a perfect circle, I'd use Bend. You can use the ctl key for snapping to increments to get it exactly 180. Or just do it numerically.

Take a look at this turbosquid link (http://www.turbosquid.com/HDView/index.cfm/ID/680313/r/2/i/7) and look at the bends in this tentacle. What would you think would be the best way to achieve these sort of deforms? You'd have to use a pretty tight bone chain to get a smooth curve like that, but even then these are very precise and not hand derived (the cork-screw one for example).

I've often wondered the best way to get the sea-shell type bed of the last 4 images on that page in modeller (the diminishing radius bend), as well.

Spline Guide works for some things but you cannot bend under itself or the guide breaks. You also cannot rotate the segments laterally along the curve, so you're always faced with a bend that is always facing the same direction.

I'm actually trying to do something similar with tentacles at the moment, and its actually quite frustrating.

i think i'd use bones for that somehow, as it maintains the mesh volume.
can't think of any modeling tools that would at the moment...

thereīs a free plugin for some of these shapes called nipponite, itīs lacking some ui stuff and interactivity, but might work fine to create the initial shape instead of manually tweaking the curve and mesh.

Thereīs also extrude +

for modeling purposes and main shape, otherwise go for bones.

Still trying to get an animated roll out of the arm right. Think fire hose rolling out and back. It gets pretty messy with bones not crimping. A spline based articulated with falloff or constraints would seem like the most effective solution if it existed.

Since finding DP_SplineDeformer, I think most of this stuff would be so much simpler with it.
I am updating an old animation that did the bone trick. I decided to give the deformer a go at replacing it. What a treat!
Just be ... patient in following the directions. You WILL NEED three items: a straight path, the to-be-followed path and the thing-to-be-on-the path.
