Andy Serkis, who recently reprised the role of Gollum in The Hobbit, has been so inspired by the technology behind some of his famous roles, that he has set up a studio to develop the art of performance capture in the UK.

Serkis demonstrates to BBC News some of the ways in which technology can be used in films and video games.

Excellent. I have to say I was so impressed with Gollum in the Hobbit in terms of the emotionality portrayed in the character. It was great in LOTR but it just seemed to be a little more impressive in the new film. Although maybe the 3D helped.
