View Full Version : Hello everyone could I hve some advice please

Hello everyone. Before I post my request I'd just like to give you some background on myself. This will hopefully explain my task lol.

I have just become a Junior Content producer, I am very capable at rendering in lightwave etc and I'm a solid Photoshop user....however my job scope has changed and my boss now wants to me really get stuck into modeling in lightwave.

For my first task (and he pointed me to this forum to get some ideas) I have to create a Canberra PR9 aircraft (http://www.raf.mod.uk/downloads/wallpapers/canberra/canberra_02_1280.jpg). I will be getting formal training from him but he wants me to see what I can achieve on my own as a kind of test.

Can any of you kind folks give me some tip/pointers to get me started?

Oh btw running Lightwave 11 on a pretty beefy PC if that has any baring. My boss uses mac.

Start with reference pics like the ones here


The more reference the better. The higher res, the better.
You may check into some of those specialy books about military aircraft and scan those in.

I'd recommend going through some of the spline modeling tutorials like the one from Larry Shultz over at liberty3d on product modeling.

Also highly recommend a tutorial on modeling cars by Lewis who is mindblowingly good at this. While it is cars and not planes it is hard surface mechanical modeling and should translate well.

I would ask you boss what sort of level of detail he was looking for. This is usually determined by how the objects will be used. Closeup? Interiors? Distance shot? Depending on what he says, you may want to make a few different versions of the plane. Even if it is just a test he should be able to tell you what he wants.

Kind of a cheat, but I 've been telling a few beginners to try "modeling over" an existing model. So far I think they have been picking things up quicker.

Load a model in modeler, then place it as a background layer ( I've been picking low-rez SketchUp models for them to work off of.) There is a low-rez Canberra in 3D Warehouse. I am sure there is no guarantee of accuracy with SketchUp models, but as a beginners tool for learning they can very good.

Thanks guys this is really usefull. My boss (who is a lightwave Jedi believe me) wants an external only shot as good as I can make it.

Expanding on Dexter's post, get as many angles of the craft as well. At least 3 to 4 angles, front, side, top and perspective + close ups for details.

The details is to see last. Anyway the Splines are not made for. Cuts the object in several simple forms like primitive type that you put in different layers. Least possible points, the better it is. Use the SubPatch, and Knifes / BandSaw to add a minimum of controlled points. Created a UV Map including to add a Displacement Map.
