View Full Version : Path animation trouble... Stuck.

Lightwave Community,

I have an animation of a rotating cylinder that must wind a sheet of thick material around it. Basically, how can I animate a thick sheet of something being rolled up onto a rotating core (like rolling up a sheet of rubber around a center core)? I need to roll it up 5 layers thick and be able to see the edge in layers when done. This has been driving me crazy!

Thanks for your help.

My suggestion would be a long chain of bones - one for each segment of the sheet, and a rotation item constraint to a null, so that as you rotate the null, the bones curl up. With nodal motion, you could limit the curl of the bones farther down the chain so that they remain straight until they start to wind up on the cylinder. each bone would have a certain percentage of the rotation, and rotation limits. This might be the hard way, though.

Alternatively, I think this would be a job for ClothFX; fix one edge to your cylinder, and begin winding. Calculation of the simulation might kill render time, though.
