Speed Modeling Challenge #199 - Bender.

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's.

This week's topic: It's bender from Futurama - Pretty simple to do in an hour I think? Bonus points for extra modelling on his accessories. Enjoy. If you don't... well you can bite my shiny, metal a.. :D

Time limit: 60 minutes

Deadline: Thursday, December, 13th, 2012, 22:00 G.M.T

Uh Oh A speed challenged where I am directly comparable to everyone else :S lol

"Bite my shiny metal *****"

this was fun to make. hope you like it. i spent a few hours on surfacing and rendering.

enjoy , stevmjon

That's the ticket Stevmjon, looking good.

Here's mine.

12-08-2012, 05:48 PM
i can't seem to be able to edit my previous post...so i have to make a new one.

just wanted to add a shinier pic of bender.

I felt sooooo dreadful about the lacklustre progress towards 60 minutes, that the tacky accessory for Bender was a last minute attempt to cheer myself up  ..but I'm glad it worked, because it made me laugh all night, so i'm feeling OK now!

Bender the "lover model" :D

I like how you tastefully put the leaf right the way out there at the end... not much hiding the modesty there is there lol. That made me laugh.

The tune "Metal fingers in my body" by Add N to (x) came to mind when I saw your pic... all far too rude for such a reputable forum lol.

p.s. What is a doona? (asks a pom)

12-11-2012, 07:35 AM
…and there I was, wondering what on earth was so rude about that song, until I realised you did the fig leaf manoeuvre yourself. Well played, Kaptive! LMAOOO :D

Sorry about the inadvertent use of slang with doona - also known as a duvet, quilt/blanket/bedding ;)

stevmjon, XswampyX -

Great.... :grumpy:.... so I guess my reference picture is now completely inappropriate!

Back to the drawing board.

Hey Guys,

Nice topic.

Been saying to myself that I need to enter these again (I did one, ages ago (medical topic)) but I need to brush up on my skills, or lack of modelling skills, and lack of speed!

Anyway, as it happens, before I did the Robotochan piece for the Siggraph 2008 contest, I modelled Bender for fun. Don't think I showed him. Please don't take this as an entry as it was done bit by bit with spare time over a few days a back in April 2008, as I said. But just thought I could share him for the fun of it.

Well here is my Bender. I would hope that fans of the show know this little guy. If not there is a refernce below.

I would have to admit it is not within the time limit. I got carried away trying to perfect it. But I guess it will go well with my portfolio (Fresh outta uni wooh, lookin for a job :D).

While I am here i have to ask because I have no idea how and would love to know...
You can see in my wireframe my teeth are set-up and look like the reference but I got to rendering and realized I have no idea how to 'bold' the wireframe to make the teeth. I eventually made a texture grid but it surely must be possible the other way right?

EDIT: I also have to know another thing.
I have a cylinder head right, then i have a box to border his eyes, How can I wrap the box around the same curve as the head? none of those drag magnet things seem to work.

Thanks peeps

So officially I went way over the timer :D

Shinny metal...more renders on the Blog (http://kuzey3d.blogspot.com/2012/12/bender-shinny-metal.html)

12-12-2012, 04:07 PM
well, I'm over & late again.
The idea was to make use of that door.... and get a Bender/Quato (Total Recall) thing going.

Big difference between 60 and 90 minutes huh?

This is what I've got, and it's still over. Might take another extra 5 minutes and rough the little guy up a bit.

12-12-2012, 04:23 PM
Teeth: you could put the teeth on a different layer in the object, then in Layout click render lines in Object Properties panel.
Box from cylinder: You could just have a box intersect the cylinder. Or, if you want it to be connected geometry....
1) grab the polys around the cylinder where your box would intersect and multishift or smoothshift out and then wrestle the out outside corners back in......
OR 2) (what I would do) select the same polys hit "e" and then move the new polys straight out in the direction you want.
Either way, you will still have a curved "front". So with just those polys selected use "h" and stretch them flat.

AKA.... :D.... I've missed you too! :hat:

Edit: forgot to mention .... on the teeth.... on that new layer run polygon coloring plug, and in layout under edges check "surface borders" box

one thing i like about these challenges, is the creativity and variety.
well done to all.

the both junior benders are hilarious.

12-12-2012, 04:59 PM
for Samoht.... animated gif of steps.

12-12-2012, 07:17 PM
meh....... akaraquel can I borrow an appendage??!!

Although, it's so absurd I'm making myself laugh......:)

12-12-2012, 07:22 PM
..... akaraquel can I borrow an appendage??!!

(I've never quoted myself before)

Uh..... on second look, I think I'm covered. :D:D

12-12-2012, 09:57 PM
LMAOOOO! :O At first, i was going to say "Yeah sure Dr.JP! Here's the whole crappy scene (http://slaughterhouse.com.au/LW/SPEED/199/) with missing-textures-because-i-was-hasty-with-saving, if you want!" ...but then i realised, you had it covered so remarkably well, it was virtually ...INVISIBLE!

Thank you so much for your time with the technique run-down + animated gif :)

Joe Poe, Kuzey - ripper work

Thanks JoePoe couldn't have answered it any better. Nice render as well.
Plush bender also looks sick.

I love these challenges, hurry up and be over week so we can do another.

12-13-2012, 09:29 AM
He may look sick (he's a mutant after all) but he's very very wise!!

Only did a quick "Quato-ization".... should look sicker. But you're right, now he looks..... diseased. :(
(not a good combination with the double entendre flying around :D)

The real Quato.....

12-13-2012, 10:08 AM
akaracquel..... thanks for sharing geometry! That's.... um..... something!!

Seems, though, now he needs a new name. Bender doesn't quite fit anymore. :D:ohmy::D
(okay. I'm done. Apologies to all)

12-13-2012, 03:02 PM
Not too diseased JoePoe. If the Quatro part isn't connected to the Bender geometry with all those neat quads on the inside, a dog could still happily play fetch with it in Layout.

> thanks for sharing geometry! That's.... um..... something!!

Nothing more than the equivalent of a client saying "it's only going to be a two minute job" ..but you can deliver it in 2 seconds and still meet the deadline, Sir! :D

> Seems, though, now he needs a new name.

Agree. The name which echoed in my brain sounded a bit like what happens to the dubstep grandma who has eargasms (http://youtu.be/gV1oem8c5cQ).

Thanks for the gags, it's made my whole working week, very uplifting! :hey:

The results :-

Stevmjon - Great way to kick off. :) Nice proportions to the model and great render. Appreciate the second one. Good job.
Akaracquel - Ermm.... Nice flow to the model, not many wasted polys there. Can't seem to make out some of the model details in the render because of the purple leaves? Hold on... you can just make it out in the reflections.... argggg! nooooo!
The Dommo - Doesn't count but still a nice model, love the render. It could have come from the actual cartoon.
Samoht VII - Mini bender (1) - Love the pose, look like he's just smashed a window or something. Hard to make out the wires, but looks good.
Kuzey - Mini bender (2) - Great model as always, Just love looking at them wires. Great character in the final render. He's mean!
JoePoe - Over & late. Good modelling and proportions there, Nice idea in the final render as well.

Well I'm so glad everyone approached this in a different way, it made the judging easier. Some very good ideas/models. But one model stands out... And that model was made by this weeks winner, Kuzey. Well done.

Well done everyone. You made me laugh with your models. (in a good way!)

12-13-2012, 11:56 PM
congrats kuzey. your render is awsome.

Good one Kuzey  Now that's a baby with an attitude!

(hope nobody minds.... I swapped out my render with one with a little better little Bender)
