If you're going to go to THAT much trouble, I believe the director should do everything s/he can to utilize the non-digital nature of the item: actors touch and otherwise tightly interacting w/it.

I was floored when I saw the making of "Hellboy" feature and learned the 'mane of snakes' was not a digital effect.
