View Full Version : Clip maps: no nodal options?

I note that Clip Maps are one of the few areas that didn't get the Nodal makeover.

Are there any options for clip mapping using nodal techniques?

Yes!

In the [T] layer -> procedural texture layers is a texture that is called nodes. This gives you access to the node editor.

Um, that's there due to a DPont plugin, IIRC, not part of native LW. I'm pretty sure Jeric is asking why no native support for nodal clipmaps (a good question, all told).

Well, I'll take the credit for such deep thinking*, but I'll also bow to necessity and use DPKit.

*not that I have any evidence NewTek has ever* listened to any of my copious and brilliant suggestions.

**except "Save All Objects" in LW1.5 or thereabouts. That one's mine.

You can get a node editor in all Texture layers,
for surfacing, clip map or texture tied to an enveloped parameter,
with DP Kit stand alone "node Texture" or native LW11 texture "Node Editor".

However a texture is by nature very limited compared to a shader,
so the node editor doesn't include the possibility
to provide info about the spot normal, mesh infos
like vertex mapping or ray infos,
just the local and world position coordinates,
then except texturing and math utilities,
some other nodal processes may not work or
simply not accessible in the menu (native nodes in LW 11).

DPKit node editors are a bit different from 11 natives
i.e, Boolean node works partially in "node Texture" only.

Denis.

I'm pretty sure NT added a native version in LW11.
