Trying to plug spot info / shadow ray into the surface transparency so that wherever a shadow falls on the surface it becomes transparent.

However, not getting the results I'd hoped for.

So I checked the manual concerning the shadow ray output - which simply reads:

"
Shadow Ray (Type: Integer)
Checks
"

What does this mean? Checks what?

Cryptic manual seems next to useless.

So if it is a shadow ray, it evaluates a spot of an intersected/occluding surface along the light ray,
in your setup this surface becomes transparent for the shadow ray only
but this doesn't affect or modify the surface of the occluding object,
then the intersected object/surface doesn't occlude the previous evaluated and shaded spot, if it doesn't intersect another object,
the previous spot doesn't receive shadow.

I see, thanks Denis.

Is there any way to make a surface transparent only on the areas which are receiving any shadows? Preferably using nodes

You may try the Shadows node from DPKit,
108214

However it could be not perfect with sampled soft shadows.

In fact I need to use it with hard shadows. In my preliminary (simple test scene) Shadows from DP Kit seems to work very well (and fast) with hard shadows, by using 'Hard' output passed through an invert node.

Thanks very much (once again) Denis!
