I prefer the VPR render to the LW render. I especially like the dramatic black internal reflections (?) .

The actual render is bland and boring. What do I tweak to get something more like the VPR render?

This surface was done w/the dielectric node, w/Absorption cranked to 1000 (1k), and the IOR at 2.0. Roughness at 100%.

(serendipitously, found a cool font....)

Set Ray Recursions to 0 and you should get the black area, but probably looks bland because you have no surrounding objects occluding light, just a Backdrop Gradient.

It's rendering right now, but when it's done I'll throw in some 'flags' and see.

I thought the black was due to 'internal reinfections', and would occur even in the absence of black objects in the scene?

Nope - the black is just rays getting stuck in the material due to the low (0) ray recursion setting - one of VPR's shortcuts, if I'm not mistaken, is to set the Ray Recursions to '0'. The only way you would get black refracted in a clear object in reality is if you had actual black in your world environment.
