I'm 'wayyyyy behind on the latest LW tech for this, but: what's the current correct practice to have objects replace particles without generating a grazillion clones?*

Also, I'd like some random +/- rotation values in there too. :hey:

The old techniques, FX Linker and FX Dynamic Linker, generated a clone for every particle.

How about using instances and setting it to particles?

I think you can add random rotation in instances too...

Yepp as mentioned use instancer on your emitter, you find that in the emitters property tab( the last tab) add instancer and open it and add your object you want to use.
yes you can rotate +- values in the instance tab, you can also use a texture to add random rotation and scale etc, the instancer is overriding the particles rotation and scaling thou, you can also activate node editor for even
more advanced control.
