Having some trouble with integrating a CG Object into a live action scene. Below is a frame from the shot I'm working with, straight from Lightwave.

It doesn't look very good to me and I'm having trouble getting it looking any better. I'm going to be rendering out passes and comping it in a different program but I want the best result possible from Lightwave to start from. Anyone know of some things I can tweak to make this look a bit better or any tutorials online I can take a look at to get a better result? I'm using the video footage as environment lighting, and I have 1 light acting as the sun to give the proper shadowing. Although the shadow seems a bit light to me but I can darken it up during actual compositing. Maybe the scale is off or the edges are to sharp? I just can't figure out what is making it stick out like a sore thumb.

Here's what I have so far still a work in progress, my butterfly animation is kind of sloppy I am not one to animate properly.

It's close. First reaction is that your 3d element feels overlit (too bright). As for the butterfly animation the wings flap too slowly. It looks more like a bird than a butterfly. Another thing you could do is add noisy channel on the Y channel to give the flight path that stutter you see with butterflys.

I originally keyed the wings on 2's but that seemed really fast and bumped it up to 4's. Maybe go back down to 2's then. Thanks for the advice on adding noise to the Y Channel can I do that in Lightwave? I'll see if I can't tone down the lighting in my comp so I don't have to re-render my well.

Couple of videos of butterflies in flight. The second one slows them down by 20x so should give you a decent reference for the flap speed.

CG Integration 2nd Pass. adjusted the butterflies animation gave him more spastic movement in the Y and made his wings beat faster. Darkened the Well over all color and took some green out of it. Also added wire frame turn tables to the corners.

Lighting is your big enemy in the still. (Cant see video's through the company fire wall)

The roof over the well, should cast a shadow down on the box below as well but I don't see one.

Are you using HDRI to light?

That roof is part of the live plate and is in the background part of a shed not the well. I'm not using a HDRI I'm just using the live action plate to help light the scene. I see what you mean about the left side of the well not being in shadow though. That is next on my list to fix as well as adding a motion blur for the well.

I always add some grain and blur the edges slightly so that it doesn't have that perfect cg edge. Depending on what camera you use as well, see if there are any rolling shutter issues (any canon dslr) or other artifacts that come with digital. Also, even when I've tried in lightwave to get it as right as possible, it will never be perfect. You'll always need some colour correction, curves, etc in post. (You've probably done that though)

Just my little bit of input...
