just got Starship Troopers Invasion in the post from amazon.co.uk

here's some grabs from the making of section of the DVD

looks to be a maya, softimage and motionbuilder gig....but...no sign of mudbox...so must have been zbrush even though they didn't show any zbrush in the clips...so Autodesk might have a thing whereby only their software was to be shown.!

So it's a Starship Troopers CG production and no LW. This makes bad karma I say.

well no lightwave shown on the making of section...and no zbrush...but there's the install DVD case for autodesk software in a couple of shots on the making of section...product placement maybe?...and product NOT placed such as zbrush...competing company etc.

Also quite odd that they NEVER reference the roughnecks tv show at all and that was a SONY production!...again i smell a rat or two at work keeping autodesk up front and centre in the making of section.

I saw the top pic and thought " Oh dear...." Then I saw it was a WIP shot.

Looks like a cross between the old Final fantasy film and a blizzard cinematic.

I would' nt be surprised about product placement. On the shrek dvd's there was always an interview with someone saying they could' nt have finished the movie without AMD chips, and then later Intel.

So, is it any good then ?

film is a good watch, out of the 4 feature films i'd put this a close second to the first live action movie.

In comparison to Roughnecks...well it looks better modelled/rendered but in a 90 min film you don't have the time that a 40x22min episododic show has for character development.

acting: roughnecks is hard to beat in any of the starship trooper films
lipsync/face morphs/eyes/expressions: i thnk they used softimage facerobot...roughnecks and magpie pro looks better in my opinion.

note: roughnecks was made in 1999 with lightwave 5.6 and 3dsmax 3.0

motion capture: good, better than the spirits within - not stiff.

It's still good movie and you do 'feel' that there is a Japanese director at the helm. He also did appleseed BTW, so loads of great action scenes.

overall CG quality: it's not up there with AVATAR or PIXAR, but then what is?
Better than a console game cut scenes for sure.

I hope it does okay on dvd sales as they plan to do some more.

Roughnecks was done with more primitive tools, animating anything back in LW was a nightmare back in the time, remember the graph editor? no weightmaps, etc.

Checking the movie right now in Amazon, there's a BD for $20.

heck, pity there is no lighwave mentioned but AD is the ruling ring seemingly, it binds this industry way too tight

Nice to get some extras on the dvd. These days extras seem to be reserved for the blue ray release of films.

Just read a blue ray review and he said there was nudity in it. Heh, japanese animators have plenty of practice animating naked 3d characters. I think chun li was naked in an animated street fighter cartoon I saw years ago.

He gave it 3.5 out of 5. He liked the story, liked that some main characters were in it, but felt the film and animation felt like an extended video game cut scene.

I' ll wait a while for it to get cheaper and might get it then.

i still prefer the 1997 version, the characters in st invasion still feel cartoony despite the mocap. i prefer real actors interacting with the cg bugs in the original movie.
