View Full Version : How to turn off volumetric lights such that no calculations are spent rendering them?

I have a scene with 72+ volumetric lights. And they are currently being animated on and off at different times by dropping the nodal volumetric texture value to zero.

However, I've discovered that this is not particularly render efficient, since a similar amount of time is still spent rendering the 'off' (non-appearing) lights to the 'on' lights.

I've tried also dropping the volumetric texture layer opacity to zero, and also the light intensity, luminosity, and density. But with similar results. i.e. I can't get the render time for non-appearing volumetric lights to drop to zero.

Obviously they can be switched off completely in the scene editor… but that's not animatable.

Does anyone know of a solution?

Ok, best way to solve this seems to be to make the switch to be a move of the volumetric light 100kms away - and therefore well out of the render
