Hmmm, schedule is wrong for Day 2 on Siggraph page. Should be Lino with Softbodies right now.

But boy you could tell it was a recession. All parties had modest sized booths. This economy is crushing the fun out of everything!

Compare this to E3, the video game expo in the same space. E3 is gigantic and expensive full of huge, attention getting booths. It is ironic that both games and Siggraph deal with computer graphics but the games industry is so much bigger!

Even E3 has felt the pain though. It has really downsized in recent years but at least that puts the focus on games not fancy city-block sized "booths."

Meanwhile the Lightwave demos were great with LW11.5 behaving very well and not crashing the way .0 releases of software sometimes do in demos.

Plus I saw KIKKI STOCKHAMMER for the first time in years! She has gained weight, looks great!

Audio during montage or studio demo reels is very low.
Especially when someone from a studio is speaking.
During live demo's everything is great.

Yeah, all of a sudden they'll go "blue" when they hit stuff they only got permission onsite @ Siggraph (or they will focus on the talking heads).

You are a good man Khan, a good man. I will watch the store closely.

Just watching Dora the Explorer presentation. This is something I would really like to get into. I worked with kids in a major UK children's hospital, creating an interactive program, a couple of years ago and it was such a great experience. Watching them smile and laugh at your work was so rewarding.

For one of the demos, it would be good to see whether the new scene editor provides access into the instancing, dynamics, etc. properties. That's been a limitation up to now, especially since relatively little is multi-edit aware.

I liked what I saw on the soft bodies area, but the whole presentation was a bit thin...much more thinner than his previous (i.e. Genoma) presentations. The fact that he added the rigid part at the beginning makes me think they really are short on content for soft bodies

I was expecting some true cloth demo, a caped character or something along those lines...
I understand itīs impossible to have content for everything...just mentioning...

Waves of light

Even E3 has felt the pain though. It has really downsized in recent years but at least that puts the focus on games not fancy city-block sized "booths."

E3 decided years ago to limit the attendees to buyers and press. It was bigger when it was letting the "fanboys" in. But there were complaints from buyers that it was too crowded and the fans hated standing in lines only to watch "some dude" walk up to the front of the line.

There was even talk of getting rid of "booth babes" but that talk quickly went away.

And, yes, Kiki does look great!

The only thing that I think is a bit cheesy that he's constantly mentioning the price of LW11.5

Given the price increases from AutoDesk, and the high price of C4D, it's unsurprising; given the economy right now, price matters. With the repeated mention of unlimited rendernodes, I think they're trying to also position it with a mind to the per-node fees for most 3rd party renderers for other packages.

It's a trade show. They're trying to sell stuff.

Mind you, I'd really like to see them show off some really heavy stuff. I'm somewhat surprised that Iron Sky isn't being featured more, in terms of the heavy content that they had to shift and the timescale involved.

Matt

Everything looks very profesional this year.
LW 11.5 looks great, presentation are great (the LW3D group are doing an excellent work over there), new site is great and I canīt wait to put my hands on this free update!!!
There are sooooo many things to play with!!! The simple ones that we asked for so long time like native uvs unwrapping tool and smart modeling tools ( I guess that is only the beginning ) til the sophisticated ones like the new additions to the instance/flocking system, the new softbody and Genoma rigging system. Everything looks so good and so well implemented!!!
That is the way to go, team!!! I canīt help myself saying congratulations to all of you. Well done, really!!!:beerchug:

The show was awesome, i won many things and Sean Hargreaves book is off the hook !
I cancelled pretty much all shows i planned to go to. That's how good it was. Just hanging out with the team is so cool, they are all great, and really taking in consideration all we say.
Rob was awesome on stage and a great manager who gives credit to everybody. There is so much passion in the booth that you can almost smell it. I try to describe it as well as I can. All i can say is that the incoming years and months are going to be great and We'll all be happy we stayed on board. I usually don't sound like a fanboy but i haven't been that excited about it in ages. I hope the streaming let you feel the whole stuff that is beyond words and images

Awesome! Haven't been able to get Jimmy Rig to work (yet) with my Kinect. So this will be cool.

Excellent tricaster operation, Matt!! Excellent presentation and very pro.

2 things:
1. Will there be an integration demo? I'd like to see the After Effects integration.

2. Leap Motion looks like it would be a FANTASTIC capture device for the Studio part of Lightwave for MoCap. After seeing what they did for pupeteering anything in LW using PS3 UI ... wow!

Leap motion, google it if you haven't heard of it.

Someone is going to make a TON of money here.

nah, doubt it.

hmm, but didn't D-Storm work on a Kinect (http://forums.newtek.com/showthread.php?t=123798) plugin last year though... ?
a dual Kinect system inside LW would rock... (!)

the LW SDK has the full ability, i think NT is waiting for some 3rd party guys to do it, shouldn't be too hard to make it work.

maybe the Jimmy|Rig (http://www.origamidigital.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=419) guys wanna to do it... ?

The only thing that I think is a bit cheesy that he's constantly mentioning the price of LW11.5Actually, I don't see a problem with him re-emphasizing that point in every interview. It's LW's No.1 selling point, especially with many of the feature gaps being closed in the last few versions.

I really like the direction Rob has LW going. Very impressed.

So what is new and available in LW dealing with motion capture?

I watched quite a bit of the stream but missed anything on mocap. I also wonder how well everything works with two or three characters rigged and animated - does everything still bog down?

All in all it looks pretty good. I'm impressed. And the fact that they've got videos up already is amazing considering years past it tool a LONG time to get them ready. Yes... most impressive.

For yesterday videos:

http://www.ustream.tv/lightwave3d/videos

THANK YOU! I missed the Genoma demo stream yesterday because I got called into a meeting at exactly 2:30. Aaargh! Then today, I was able to stop by Siggraph in person for a couple of hours but had to leave before the second Genoma presentation because I had to pick up my daughter from camp at the Natural History Museum. I might get to pop in again tomorrow but for now at least I can catch up on what I missed yesterday.

And, yes, Genoma looks very cool. It is certainly not "just updated skelegons"--for starters, that smooth Modeler-to-Layout interaction shown goes way beyond what you can do with Skelegons alone. I'm still not sure it addresses certain long-standing issues with Lightwave and Motion Builder compatibility discussed elsewhere in these forums but I need to see tomorrow's presentation and try to talk to Lino to be sure.

If it really is 'all that', I can't wait to try Genoma on our next Little Green Dog film project. :)

They showed a preset genoma rig that they exported to mbuilder. Lino getting annoyed with mbuilder, "What is this software.." in italian accent :D.
Then proceeded to loading clips and exporting that out. Import motion envelopes in layout. Adding fk animation on top of the preset rig. I think its pretty cool and addresses the many issues with lw>mb pipe and the juggling of fbx, bones, joints, names, etc. Maybe someday we can have actual retargetting in layout because there's a preset rig now
I already asked the performance when there are more than 2 genoma rigs in layout as well as dealing with naming rigs, load item from scene issues in heated genoma thread at hc forum. Hopefully Lino responds again with a video demo about this possible issues.

Yer, I twitted it on the #lightwave3d tag last night too.

Hey guess What ? After the magazine, the tee shirt, Marc Zicree signed poster, tofu figure, i just won a copy of LightWave ! I'm soooo Lucky ! Woooow i'm happy i got to come to Siggraph !

Matt, how about they do a live video compitition, for all us guys and girls watching (if anything, just to stop Khan from winning everything :D)

Kinect - would like to see more on this. If they are thinking of integrating motion capture using the Kinect system, that's just another tick in the 'do it all in lightwave' box.

One thing I have noticed is that you guys are adding extra bits to each presentation, so it's worth watching the presentations from both days. e.g. Lino showed us how to setup the PS3 controllers yesterday, but I don't think that was in the first day's presentation. It's looking like he add extra to the Genoma pres too, so I will be checking that out later today.

Thanks again, this has been an excellent experience.

Hey NewTek,

For next year's Siggraph, in addition to the live stream, how about an actual chat room for forum peeps to log into. That would be a more fluid way for people to congregate instead of refreshing a thread.

It was fun listening to Wes Ball speaking about his short film "Ruin" over at the Modo booth.
He had done his modeling in Modo (which make the Modo people smile big) - but then they all got a bit more jittery when he answered quiestions about the film itself.
Basically it is a one man show - all done in Lightwave.
Him about eight months to do. And it sounds like it may have worked. Using it as a calling card, he has been in talks with Paramount regarding a live action version
A lot of LW love happening in a surprising place.
