Speed Modeling Challenge #181 - Utility
*************************************************

Rules:

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modelling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
3. LightWave must be used for modelling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's .
*************************************************

This week's topic is: Utility - things you find useful.
(Definitions:
Noun: The state of being useful, profit-able, or beneficial.
Adjective: Useful, esp. through being able to perform several functions: "a utility truck". )

Time Limit is 60 minutes. Contest ends 0001 CDT (GMT-6) 26 July 2012

Hmm... I might want to enter this one. :) Beeing on vaccation and, well... I'm not doing a lot of modeling at work... could be a good thing for me to exercise some modeling. :)

One question though... is 60 minutes the limit for just the modeling part, so if I spend 60 minutes modeling, I can then spend whatever time I want to do shading/texturing/lighting/animation/rendering? Or is it 60 minutes for everything if one wants to do something additional, so to speak?

@Cageman, the 60 minutes is just for the modelling, scene set up time is unlimited, well, until the deadline, which will usually be 22:00 GMT.

The current one Speed Modelling Challenge #180 - Inner Space (http://forums.newtek.com/showthread.php?t=129297) is still going until 22:00 GMT, and is looking a bit lean if you fancy making an entry.

@Kryslin, I think shifting the deadline around each week might get a bit confusing.

@JoePoe and XswampX, nothing wrong at all with those challenges guys, for me I've just been hard pressed to get anything done these last few weeks. Real life sticking its nose into my LightWave time and all that.

Eh, whatever. 2200 GMT it is, which puts the end of the contest in the middle of my shift at work (1600 CDT Wednesday afternoon). I chose 1 minute after midnght, because that's when next wednesday ends for me, and I'm likely to be in front of the computer at that time...

An hour of attempting to make a Chinese military shovel (http://youtu.be/b60OZhrTB6o). Couldn't finish it so it might have to pass as an over the top bottle opener :)

Just because I can't win doesn't mean I can't enter something... :)

Obviously, an object of great Utility, indeed. :)

And not want to sound stupid, can someone point me towards a how-to on how to make a wireframe render...?

Swampy - I like the chrome surface on the clippers. Very realistic.

akaracquel - A bottle opener for every kind of bottle made. Neat!

I'm over. :cursin:
Mostly because, in my infinite insanity, I decided to model-in the logo which isn't on the actual design. :screwy:

In terms of "utility"..... 'nuff said. :)

(modeled with all due reverence and respect regarding the recent tragedy.)

JoePoe : Ah, the signature utility belt. :) Nicely done.

And now it falls upon me to render judgement... (presses F9)

Both of the legal entries have good, clean geometry, and fit the subject matter perfectly. With the preprocess done...

I'm going to hand off the prize to Akaracquel, for the sheer complexity of her choice. :D:D:D I would be hard pressed to duplicate that without blueprints.

Thanks for participating, everyone!

Well done Akaracquel, that's a solid start to a tricky object.

Did you ever finish it?

Good job Aka!!
Your wires are looking cleaner and cleaner!

I'll finish my belt if u finish ur shovel :hey:

(XswampyX - ur wires are so clean I feel like I should be in a bunny suit just looking at them.)

I'll finish my belt if u finish ur shovel :hey:

..if there's a way to extend it into some kind of animation challenge, i'm up for it ;)

Hmmm, animate? I can make the little buttons on the canisters slide up and down. ;D

Actually, I think I've just about had enough with this thing. Also, just lost all my surfacing. Like a souffle it rose.... and and fell.

<souffle goes poof> :D

Would it be possible to share the wires Joe Poe? I'm keen to see how you played Mahjong with the quads :)

Certainly!

1st image is wires around the 1 hr mark (maybe more like 1:15).
2nd is, obviously, the final. Not too much changed, apart from additional pieces (I did redo the belt link element). But I also spent quite a bit more time tweaking things here and there.... to no real visual effect. When the clock is off I tend to get mired down in minutiae.
(one of the main reasons I love these challenges, gets me out of that headspace.)
