Or if you want...do it the old fashioned way.

Make a tall cylinder, slap a 'Turbulence' or 'fractal noise' on the transparency channel with some movement on the Y axis.

If your cylinder is 1 mtr tall, make the scale say 0.1, 0.6, 0.1 then play about.

Create multiples of different thicknesses and texture offsets for thickness. Slap on some motion blur to blend them.

Here is a sample object, not perfect, but gives you the idea.

Thought I'd add this comment:
I was playing around last night with this and found that turning on "ray-trace transparency" and setting my threads to 2 (AMD XP1800+ single CPU) - I got the render time down from 39.8 secs to 8.3
So that makes it much faster to render, also, I forgot to turn on 'double-sided' for the surfaces so you may want to do that to give it more thickness.

I just tried your scene file, turned on transparency, raytraced shadows, everything in the rendering panel, plus turned on field rendering and went from 9.5 seconds down to 4.2 seconds. Looks better and renders faster? Oh yes, I have dual 1.7 Xeons, set to 8 threads. :confused:

Wow, I turned off field rendering and went down to 1.8 seconds. :D

2 threads on a single CPU for me so 8 on a dual is probably in there.
I have found playing around with the settings can result, on a scene by scene basis, a significant change in render time.

As to field-rendering, the jury is out, tohugh biased - most tend not to use it.
Think of it as scanning the same image twice, thus the dramatic difference in speed.

Hope this give you some insights. Can be used for fire as well of course, just change the colours to yellows and reds.
Or blues and cyan with faster motion for rocket thrusters.

I'm sure there are more too! ;)
