I have the Onyx garden suite, getting a bit old now. They seem to have updated it reasonably well. It takes a fair bit of getting accustomed to, but it is good once you get the hang of it.

I purchased plants # 1 from 3Dplants.com, but they I was most interested in were in .obj -format (not .lwo as told in the site). Has somebody same experience with these?

Snappy Tree was cool to play with but I had a hard time getting things exported. It also doesn't export textures. They told me where to go to get them, but I forget where though.

Oh I found them:

its exports fine via .dae however its just one texture and its not UV'ed but for a quick tree it works excellent , also its json so you can tweak away

Lightwave - in my experience - imports the OBJ files just fine. I've got at least one of the collections from 3dplants.com and they work fine, but I rarely use them since most of the time I work primarily with stills and flat images with clipmaps are better.

Also, aside from Onyx trees and plants, XFrog has many good libraries though they are somewhat expensive. Dosch Design has several model packages that have hedges and bushes as well as trees.

IMO Onyx is probably the best since you can make as many as you want. Of course the thing is, you can't resell them, just use them in your own projects.

Well part of the problem with Snappy Tree was that it doesn't export at all in Firefox. I had to use Chrome for my test.

Sound interesting using clipmaps. How do you do it? Makeing an alpha image?

Mistake from me. The plants from 3Dplants.com I got were in .3ds - format (not .obj as I wrote).
Is there a possibility to load .3ds in LW ?

I have it too, but ... The trouble with the Onyx Suite is: NO WEIGHT MAPS. But as a generator of scientifically-accurate plant species, it's great.

xfrog have 130 free species, in different formats, including lightwave..
can be a little confusing, do not click on the categories to the left, click directly on the species name, and even so you will see a cost for it, but right above quantity you have the free download text and fileformats.

http://xfrog.com/130-free-xfrogplants-now-available/

Correction 30 free plants, each plant has 3 or 4 variations thou, ergo 130

Yes, the 3ds importer is one of the default ones, like obj.

The collections I have generally already come with the alpha ready to go. These are expensive, but there are many and they look great:

http://www.marlinstudios.com/products/tropical/tropical.htm

http://www.marlinstudios.com/products/vtf/vtf.htm

There are a few free downloads so you can check them out. And there are also quite a few other collections available that have the same alpha channels ready to go. Unfortunately with Lightwave though, you can't just save the object (easily) with alpha channel - the clipmap (containing the alpha image) is saved in the scene file and not the object file. I've only got up to LW9.6, so I don't know if they've done anything new in 10 or 11.

Any more questions, just ask away.

Yes, .3ds loads fine (most of the time) into Modeler. Then just re-save as .lwo.

I find only 3ds export plugin.

You don't need to import into LW, just use the standard Load. When you open the Load requestor box you won't see the .3ds file, just change the Files of Type in the Load requestor box to All Files and you will see your .3ds file. It should load fine.

I just followed the procedure I outlined above in LW5.5, 7.5 and 9.6 - all three versions of LW loaded the .3ds file without a problem. Is this one of the free objects from 3dplants.com? If so, send me to the link and I'll download and try it here.

I get "invalid file" when trying to attach the .3ds -file. Maybe there has been something wrong when I downloaded from 3Dplants.

Internet Explorer is notorious for doing this to files. use another browser - I use FireFox - and haven't had a problem since.

Some of them are lovely but after having bought a few of the libraries last night after a few glasses of vino and even though the app itself is windows based... a lot of the bought stuff in .lwo format doesn't have the transparency channel sorted whereas all the free stuff does.

- I can't seem to UV map Secularity? Like what's going on here...

I would mail and complain about the issue regarding transparency, feels like false advertisement showcasing how the products are in the free give aways, and when you buy it ..it is not the same.

donīt know about the specularity, havenīt had any time to check.

Thanks Michael, seems like a strange way of treating paying customers as it's work you'd assume you've already paid for. Could be that it's just left up to you which way you want to proceed as all the material is there? I guess @$1 per plant it's more or less well spent:)

Pity since their plants has very good quality and I would purchased all 4 collections. But now I don't dare since I don't know what format they support. So if someone from 3Dplants.com read this, please give me an answer ...

It loaded fine without a problem in LW9.6 as a .3ds object.

No materials or maps though so you'd hardly call that 'supported'.

I said nothing about "supported." I said that the .3ds file loaded fine. Since it says on that webpage that there are no materials I didn't expect any. I was just confirming to ige that the model files in .3ds format load fine. I think your "supported" comment is intended for the XFrog point in this thread?

I downloaded the "http://3dplants.0catch.com/flower10.html", but I got the same error as before. Since you could open it, I think maybe the problem is my LW10,0. Is there a plugin I need, or may it be some options I miss?

I've only got up to LW9.6, though I doubt that you would need a special importer to load this file format. If you're planning on buying those plants, they do have them in .lwo format - as well as .obj and .3ds. Why not send them an email and ask for a sample in the .lwo format? Can't hurt. :)

Figures.

Perhaps LW did not automatically load the import plugin. Go to add plugins and navigate to Modeler plugins and see if there is anything there having to do with .3ds import - is so, load it, if not... crap. I have all of my LW machines shut down at the moment, so I can't check.
