So, yeah... depth map shadows would be very nice, especially on area lights. It fixes the noise problem and it renders incredibly quickly in comparison to ray traced (for area lights at least).

Why I'm even mentioning it:-

Gnomon have a course called "Efficient Cinematic Lighting" by Jeremy Vickery in which -- although he just kind of mentions it in passing -- it's pretty obvious what's so good about depth map shadows for area lights:
