As i said on the spaceship thread i wasn't going to post this here.
I feel that here is a kinda anti-spaceship attitude because of some of the Lightwave prejudice (that i do not care). The other reason is that i used Lightwave only for the spaceship with minimal work. I don't like modeling!

There is nothing wrong with organic shapes like beautiful rendered human portraits that have tiny little hair all over it , with billowing long hair and eyes you can see through! I would love to make them too but that is not in my list much above :)

I love spaceships and pictures like this one :)

I would have seen Prometheus only because of the spaceship alone too. Unfortunately the visuals and spaceship is probably the best part of that movie...anyway 8/

I had another render that evolved so much ,
but that i could not make quite so that i would like it .
The best part are the clouds probably.
It is attached below.

After this crowded one i wanted to make a basic-plain image
and the above one (spaceship with galaxy) came out quite easily . And i like it more too!

As you said djwaterman it looks not real but kind of a painting :)

After this one i really think that i should not restrict myself in that regard probably. Not that my images are realistic looking like some of the images here on the forum :thumbsup:

David, the background galaxy is a procedural with a mask
from a heavily postworked hurricane image from the web
that i used in the background node in Terragen 2.

I used a spaceship that i modeled in Lightwave as i said.
I put it in Terragen 2 and made some displacements
by using an image map with the micro render (ray trace objects OFF) in Terragen 2 .
So i made some finer real displacements from the image texture.
The model had not much real fine detail and no color .
I put the color in post on the image.
The spaceship image below is the very same image i used in the final image but minus postwork .
I made the model very fast from an 16 year old model with basic lathe operations etc.
It is the very old version of the model i used here.

In fact this is the same model but differently combined :

I have unfortunately not the same patience for modeling .
So i cheat where i can :)
But i liked the outcome of the model (at least in the postworked image)
and i think maybe i will make it ones more seriously
this time with real detail and surface...

For the thruster look i did a crop from the background galaxy (see the second image below).
Then made two copies of it. Blurred one a little.
On the other copy i used a little motion blur and
then put them over themselves and tried some blending methods.
I copied the resulting one and copied it ones more
and tried other blending methods ones more.
Don't remember exactly which ones
but there are many other looks you can get in such an approach.

You could make something like this in Lightwave with polygons and procedurals etc. or paint it easily .

Basically this was it David.

Edit : I looked at your webpage. I see you you don't need so much detail :thumbsup:

PS. Terragen 2, is it really worth it? I hear that the interface is somewhat difficult etc...

I could write many things but mostly it would depend on your preferences .
I think the best would be that you try it for yourself.

Terragen 2 has one of the best policies i think in that you can use it so long you want.
It has only some dimension and objects and render restrictions.
There is no time limit.
I used the free version probably more then 2-3 years before i bought it.

If you want to render landscapes , clouds at a grand scale and are good with a node GUI
(you can use it without the nodes too ) and can wait for long render times :) i certainly think that it is worth it.

I used the demo of VUE many years ago and didn't liked it.
The render engines do look different. I like Terragen 2 more in this aspect .
But this is really only a subjective preference.
There are many great Vue users and renders .

I like Lightwave very much too but not everybody likes it .

Since many years i try to use Blender but i choose Lightwave ,
for my personel use and bought it instead going for free 8~. go figure :)

As i said if you have time try the free version of Terragen 2 , Renderwerx .

Vue..... It was not a good investment. I struggle with render times
thinking of giving it a try with Terragen :)

Ops! If you hate long render times TG 2 is not ...ahem..a fast renderer too !

I will try to use Lightwave more like TG2 in the future.
Not sure how it will go .
Some object texturing and long render times are mostly the reason .

Stones landscapes can be easily exported from TG 2 .
You could use the clouds too of course with some postwork .

You can get help from the Terragen 2 forum there.

In the TG 2 forum is a "file sharing" section.
You can use those files to better understand it etc.
Please do not hesitate to ask there :)

I have to say the sky in terragen looks fantastic. I downloaded the free version. Limitation is render output, but OK to test drive. Weekend won't get boring... LOL
