View Full Version : What benefit is it to have 2 video cards for 3d work and rendering?

Our company is getting ready to buy a new computer for 3D apps. The specs for the computer are as follows. Dual Quad Core IntelŽ XeonŽ Processor E5620 (2.40GHz,12M L3, 5.86GT/s, turbo, 24GB, 1333MHz, DDR3 RDIMM, ECC (6 DIMMS), Dual 2GB NVIDIAŽ QuadroŽ 4000, DUAL MON, 2DP & 1DVI and a 2 gig hard drive Raid 1. My question is what are the benefits of the two video cards and does this machine sound o.k. for modeling and rendering? This is for animation at a planetarium.

You'll see absolutely no benefits for modeling, viewport performance, or anything else like that. The only area you would see performance is rendering, and this is ONLY if the render engine you are using supports GPU rendering.

If your apps support CUDA, (like 3D Coat and maybe some some physics engines. Adobe Premiere and some other video encoding/editing apps will also use the GPU for rendering), you'll get a boost. I think two Quadro 4000's would be major overkill for the current version of LightWave.

Why a pair of low end x56xx CPUs? Cinebench benchmark will be about 8.3

This may be ok for a render node without GPU etc (bare bones box), but not for a workstation. Your dollars per GHz per whole box set up will cost the earth! If you can't afford top end CPUs go for a 3930 or 3960 box, & you will also have great single core performance for everything other than rendering.

A few benchmarks, relative performance which you can then use for LW:

dual quad at 2.4ghz 5620???
that makes no sense until you are looking for a very complicated way to burn money ;-)
a single 6core at 3.9ghz will outperform the two quads.
all single threaded tasks like modeling will be damn slow at 2.4ghz.

to answer you question... if you work with LW a dual GPU setup only helps if you play BF3 in highres on that machine.
the quadro 4000 is much slower than a 580 or 680 gamer card with LW. with other apps quadro can help, but not with LW.

I agree with Andy, get a system built around a fast i7 processor, it will be faster (unless you compare it to the top of the line uber expensive double quad), quieter and consume much less energy than a dual quad system.
