I'd have to say the Enterprise from TOS. I was enthralled with that show and when I got a model as a kid I played with it until the engines fell off. It's been improved upon over the years, but that original shape.... something about it that I really like a lot.

I always thought the Scimitar from ST:Nemesis was awfully cool, especially when it deployed its main weapons, like a huge bird of prey going in for the kill: http://images.wikia.com/memoryalpha/en/images/a/a8/Scimitar.jpg

But as people said, there's so many really cool designs to choose from, the Nostromo (Alien), the Sulaco (Aliens), Nebuchadnezzar (Matrix), Normandy (Mass Effect games), a lot of the Star Wars ships (from the small ones like Slave 1 to the huge Executor Star Dreadnought, Nebulon-B and GR-75), Event Horizon (Event Horizon), the Deridex class Romulan warbird (Star Trek TNG), the Rodger Young (Starship Troopers), Battlestar Galactica (BSG 2003), Cylon Raiders (Glen Larsons design for BSG 1978, not those awful new ones), Betty (Alien 3), C21 Dragon (Avatar), etc, etc,

But as people said, there's so many really cool designs to choose from, the Nostromo (Alien), the Sulaco (Aliens), Nebuchadnezzar (Matrix)

those three are also favourites, Itīs hard to pick just one as the most coolest thou, each one serves as a sort of character for the film, displaying enourmous power ranging from firepower, travel at vastīs speeds, or serving as complete stage set in a rather dark enivironment otherwise, and even serving as homeīs as in battlestar or star trek for that matter, they are the sci-fi tool to replace the home, cars and showcasing power.

Lex was interesting too, maybe a little to obviuos in design look as an insect, but quite powerful ship.

I have yet to discover the looks of Iron sky ships thou..

cool to see so many variations in ship design, ranging from a lot of nurnie pipes and blocks as in star wars, to huge antennas going up as in Nostromo, or more threatening forward in weapon style as in sulaco, and
very alien design wich often has more curved insect or boney structure to them.

Machines are a little boring when it comes to cyborgs, huge cube style?

My top three all-time favourites, in the order shown.

Thunderbird 2, for me, conveys a bulky powerhouse image akin to the Vulcan bomber, and that gives me a belly-tingle when I see it - heaven knows what Thunderbird 2 would do!

The Snowspeeder is just a fantastically compact package, 2-man all-contained versatile unit - not particularly fast, but just love it - agile, sleek, reminds me a bit of the original Cylon Raider, which I also like.

The X-Wing. C'mon - it's a dart, it has a funky wing array that shoot four lasers, and it makes a cool sound when it flies past the camera. What's not to like!

littlewaves
06-12-2012, 04:16 AM

I always found it a bit too conventional looking for the Galaxy Far Far Away. A bit too NASA looking?

Although it always looked cool taking off or landing I guess.

FWIW, I never liked the Serenity. It's supposed to be a 'freighter'? But it's TINY. I never felt the sets corresponded well to the model.

(Also: never got on the Firefly bandwagon, cuz I loath Western stuff. Genius costuming move though-- saved a ton of money there.)
+++
No love for "Farscape"? I thought that was the BEST show. Here's a vote for Moya, and various Peacekeeper ships.

My all time fave ship was probably the Rodger Young from "Starship Troopers", a movie that makes me want to punch Verhoeven right in his rich smug face.

Nangleator

This is an oddball one, since I don't think the ship itself is particularly special, but the moment the ship comes online in Galaxy Quest, and all the actors realize they're in a real, powerful spaceship... that was a very cool feeling. Perhaps it was the theater experience.

X-Wing and B5 Starfury are my favorites. Oh, and White Stars. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD3KricYMOI)

well as everyone has covered the top ten favourites I'll stand the argument on it's head and say what I thought was the worst, the interior of the craft Chuck Heston is sitting in in the opening shot of the first Planet of the Apes movie, god that was a half assed cobbled together piece of crap, and the dropped in space effects seen through the forward window, to think someone actually got paid for that.

What about the Gunstar from Last Starfighter? (or do people not admit to seeing that movie?).

Ah, the gunstar... it would be difficult even now to duplicate the death blossom.

I noticed no one mentioned Hawk's ship from the Buck Rogers TV show. ;)

Imagine that. Your species descended from hawks. You look like a hawk. Your ship looks like a hawk. You name yourself Hawk. (Probably not a popular move with all the other people from your planet -- you took the good name!)

I always figured Buck should have called himself Ape and flown around in a ship that looked like a monkey. At least change the name away from Buck! Hawk must have been confused that Buck's ship didn't look like a deer or something.

I liked the bizarre derilict spacecraft in alien too, based upon Gigers necronomicon drawings, and Itīs gonna be interesting to see how the ship in prometheus looks like, the looks of it from trailer is more high tech electrical somehow, as opposed to the bizarre organic style it seems.

One thing about movie spaceships is, they've become, well, standardized.

Geiger's designs for the original Alien were refreshingly original. --And scary and creepy.

Instead of kitbashing, I think designers should be going to florists and butcher shops to get their working materials. Now, THAT would look ALIEN.

Yeah, as a kid I had a big plastic version of the Eagle (maybe 3' long) that was awesome. Not quite sure what happened to it, for all I know my mom still has it somewhere. Also had a smaller metal die-cast version with interchangable cargo modules.

The coolest thing about the Eagle is that it looked "human" versus "sci-fi". It's greebles are off Apollo-era craft, like the quad thrusters. It really wasn't tremendously far-fetched, and I still hold out vague hope we'll see something similar built for real service on the moon. That's what made it cool: It wasn't utterly beyond what we are capable of building for practical use, unlike most of the other "cool" space-/star-ships

Unfortunately, I get the impression most who even remembered it are moving beyond the age of having any significant influence on actual vehicle designs.

kadri
06-14-2012, 12:28 AM
I build many small and big models of the eagle at those times. I could not find the model kits here. I build them mostly from paper ,wood etc.

And as you said i was a little surprised that nobody mentioned it by now there. I begin to feel my age with every year more and more but i will resist so far i can!

Kinda off topic:
I made this picture 1 month ago . I wasn't going to post it here but Rayek and Jwiede changed my mind. Not sure why , probably purely emotional :)

UK sci fi was very inventive at that time, very imaginitive, atmospheric, low budget stuff. It just seemed really insignificant compared to Star Wars etc.

Back to worst. That hideous box-like shuttle they used in the original Star Trek, a caravan with doo-dads hanging off it. Extra bad points for keeping that aesthetic into the later series when they had bigger budgets to work with.

Which was reminiscent of the 'jumpers' used in "SG: Atlantis", except change it to a tube.

Look below . There are more then one section about this and i think that site is nice in general anyway.

How much original are we? Can you make anything that is realy completely original? We all have our influences !

As i saw Star Wars at first , one of the first thoughts was that how much the millennium falcon does look like the one in the Valerian series.

This brings many memories to my mind! I don't like the caricature side so much in the comic series. But there are really good albums there and they influenced me very much .

Of all the things in Star Wars, my most recent "diggin it" has been the Y-Wing, although as a kid it was of course X-Wing. It's also cool whenever the Clone Wars Y-Wing appear as a panelled version.

Isnīt prometheus ship quite similar to serenity too?

By the way, interesting to see how the work on the Aliens sulaco was interchanged between first syd mead, then james cameron changed it completly and sent back more of his own version but a little round in the edges, then syd mead reshaped it upon that design and made it more harder in style, and I like that.
Syd Meads final draft of the sulaco..
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kielbryant/377925522/

James Camerons suggestion of the sulaco...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kielbryant/377925520/in/set-72157624276192809

Syd Mead came up with the drop ship too, but there I think james cameron maybe spoiled the design when he made it more vietnam like, perhaps it fitted better with the theme and sense of war, but I liked the Syd Mead original design better.

I loved the all the framework on that.
