Speed Modeling Challenge #174 - Sentry Gun.
*************************************************

Rules:

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug-ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
6. The winner is judged by the challenge starter and the prize is to set up the challenge after next week's .
*************************************************

This week's topic is: Death, Murder, Kill! - Just playing COD MW3 and they have these great auto sentry guns. So what's your take on the auto sentry gun, is it a tracked gattling gun, or a single shot spud gun..... the choice is yours.

Have fun!

Time limit: 60 minutes
Deadline: Wed. 6th June 2012. 22:00 G.M.T.

Had to stop at 60 min... got a little creative and couldn't really focus on something simple. Needs a lot more refinement, but hey, on my own I have more than the 60 min.

Barely got this done in the time limit. Had to really rush the legs on it so they look kinda bad. Here be my entry, the Team Fortress 2 Sentry.

Gonna go back to it add some nuts, bolts and some better geometry for the leg stands as well as better textures.

I could use a link/photo reference. When I search cod auto sentry gun, I don't find anything like the models already posted. (Which both look great. They are the two best cod auto sentry guns I have ever seen. :) ) Seriously, great modeling guys.

Needs a targeting system and some ammo. But what can you do in only an hour.

@Amurrell I like it, looking forward to seeing it textured. Is it an electric firing mechanism?

@VictoryX, I never played much of TF2, but it seems pretty faithful from what I remember.

@XswampyX, holy smokes, great model and lovely texture work, I'm going to feel shamed into spending a little more time on my entries. Love the barrel discolouration.

Screen grab is at the 60min mark. I spent additional time fixing/tweaking etc. :hey:

More on the blog..as always.

Well I'm no expert with textures but... I'll probably be messing with this from time to time.

PPsshhh you guys... stationary sentry guns are so 80's... :D You won't assassinate anyone or go after an intruder with that...

Over the 60 min for a raw model and nonexistent textures :foreheads

Swampy... that's just... too good. Someone's got to throw in awesome stuff when Richard and Iain ain't around right? :D

Cheers

It's only 1 hour for the wires. The rest was a fair bit longer. :)

I was going to post it sooner, but the forum was down, so I kept going with the textures. Glad you like it.

Awesome so far!!

I'm a wee bit intimidated by this one. So many pieces so little time. :chicken:

So here's a bit of last minute inspiration (mostly for me....).
Cutting down a tree with a minigun. 3000 rounds per minute!

@Probiner, I like the concept and the action shot. If I get a chance to participate I'll be going for a stationary model. What can I say, I'm just a sentimental old fool when it comes to killing with excessive firepower ;D

@stevenpalomino, great idea, I had been thinking similarly for the next challenge. :)

Well it was worth the effort, I think my efforts would go something like this; spend ages on it > fail miserable > "Didn't have much time to try for better surfacing on this one" ;)...:o

Wow, some really nice guns guys!! xswampyx, what can I say that hasn't already been said?

At any rate, I thought maybe the collection could use a ceiling mount version.

I did a model similar to this about a year ago. Decided to re-do it from scratch for this challenge. Total modeling time was 53 minutes.

Another attempt...60mins.

The bridge tool & LW's internal point/edges order gave me headaches. I wish they replace it with selected order instead.

More on the blog...as always :hey:

So much good stuff this week!!

Have to say the hand grenade made me chuckle.

race to the finish for me.
60 minutes.

No legs, no surfacing. Not even a layout wire render.

Some sloppy surfacing to better illustrate the idea of a nail-gun as a poor man's sentry gun :)

I'll say this took over an hour and I don't really intend on trying to win, I just like the idea of someone giving me something to model so i can improve. As you can see i'm not to flash atm but hopefully these challenges will help me get better.

Looking a bit like my frist entry... CAT UAV...

That is terrible! The page was taking too long to load for me, but I think I saw it in the newspaper. I'll be glad not to see it in action so I can maintain my righteous indignation, as I'm sure it does look rather amusing in action.

Lots of great entries in this one, XswampyX has his work cut out for him.

@Samoht VII, nice model, hope to see more of them. There are quite often nuggets of wisdom in these challenges.

OMG (first of all I can't believe I just used "OMG")....
I've officially taken one step closer to having seen everything!

This might not be a flying dead cat, but it is an attempt to put lipstick on a pig. :)

That is EXACTLY my frame of mind!
So, welcome, no pressure.... enjoy.
Try to soak up as much as you can from other's wireframes and if you have questions just ask.

Here we go!

Amurrell :- Great wires and some nice detailing on the detector and bolts. Like the render too.
VictoryX :- Looks exactly like the reference. Not surprised you had trouble with the legs, it's a big ask within the 1 hr time limit.
Kuzey :- Love the detailing around the rockets, great sub-patch poly flow around the holes.
Probiner :- Ahh, the future :) What a fantastic design. I don't think this is far off from what might be coming!
Stevenpalomino :- heh heh, Very good. The text has come out real nice in the render. Great Idea. I was expecting a coffin to come flying out.
Bax33 :- Cool idea. Looks like a ceiling fan. Like the detailing of the holes on the barrels.
VictoryX :- Wow! Nice detailing all round, from the chain to the control wires. Great job!
Amurrell :- Boom! quality.
Kuzey :- What a killer wire frame. Would look good on the millennium falcon. Great proportions on the model.
JoePoe :- Another great model. (There's so many this week!) Looks like it's got every angle covered. Nice joints. Cool render, How did you do the smoke?
Probiner :- Great Idea, I think you would laugh at it.... until it went off. Simple, but effective.
Samoht Vii :- That's pretty mental. :-) If that doesn't get you, nothing can. Nice modelling on the barrel and the ammo. Good start!

The winner (Don't shoot me!) is VictoryX for the mini chain gun. What's not to like. Great use of repeated geometry to give some 1st class detail to the model.

Well done everyone else. Loved them all.
