Hey everyone,

Is it just me or are the plg uv edit plugins not workin in LW 11? I'm on a mac. Did they add similar tools to LW11?
Thanks!

no Mac person, but it says OS9 and OSX...

Blender might be an option (it's time for NT to fix this though)

plg plugins arent available as UB... only cfm.

Yup, PLG not available on Mac 9.6.1 and higher, and you'd need to get the CFM version of LW 9.3-9.6 (or LW 9.2 or earlier... I think the first UB version of LW was 9.3 or 9.2) to get it to work, but those won't work on Mac OS Lion and up. :(

Not LW11 but related question.

How would I approach the Blender UV Solution? Blender can Import .lwo files but can't export to .lwo

Blender can export .lwo, just use vesion 2.49.

PC version works, if that's of any help...

@ Titus
I know about 2.49b but I have no idea how to UV in that version. Is there any good tutorial out there to import a .lwo to Blender, UV map that and bring it back to LW? Maybe even a good one for the newer versions of Blender?

@ akademus
I don't quit get what meant with that.

Well, PLG UV plugins do work with LW 11, but apparently mac version seem to have problems. Just clarifying that is not an issue of PLG UV being incompatible with LW11.

in Blender, just export .obj or collada or fbx.
Modeler will handle it... ;]

Oh Sorry guys. I'm running LW 9.6.1 not LW 11

I've been using PLG for many years now, but in many occasions I just get bad unwrap results and I have no idea why.

I.E. I make a book shelf and want to create a UV Map for better texturing. I use PLG Make UV Edit and mark the "seam" and then go Make UV. My UV is really distorted etc and I have a loooong time cleaning that UV.

That happens to me with a lot of stuff. Thats why I've been looking for a better way to UV unwrap lately.

I'll try that erikals. Just gotta find a tut how to UV in Blender now :)

K-Dawg. PLG is best for organic shapes. You can't expect it to give you straight lines in the UV for simple objects with bevels, etc.

If you find a good solution for that, report back please :D

Ahhh. Well that explains a lot. :D

Blender does seem to respect the straight lines of flat areas. But gets a bit bonkers again in bevel shifts. Well, better to just have to clean up shifts then the whole mesh. Nice alternative :)

Titus you still work with 2.4x on a regular base?

Cheers

Yes, I'm finishing a project we started with 2.49 almost two years ago. After that we plan to go after 2.5x. Many new things to master.

K-Dawg try to put "Relaxations Iterations" to 0 in PLG Make UV. Might get better results for those models. My guess would be that Area Weight is distorting the mesh and if we were able to have just 0% of it, we would have the same exact result as Blender.

Ah I also learned today that Make UV = ABF (Angle Based) and Make UV Fast = some sort of LSCM (Conformal) :)

Cheers

Lightwave still doesn't have built in unwrapping tools? What year is it 1992? 2002?, oh wait it's 2012! That's pretty ridiculous, and they charge how much for the software?

Wow.

yep, should've been fixed some time ago :]

(for PLG, you might wanna try the make atlas from surface option,
then set "relaxations iterations" to 0...)

Thanks. Gives me better results. Some distortion, but better results.

I'll have to try that. Do I have to assign different surfaces in terms of Material or does that mean surface in terms of surface?

pretty much straight forward :]

Thanks for the video. I didn't know that works. I'll have to play around with that a bit to get a hang of it.

Steve Warner wrote a tutorial on LW -> Blender -> LW workflow.

You'll want to look at the Unwrapping in Blender link.

Thanks for reminding me, I totally forgot about those. I'll have to see how I can translate that to the 2.6x series.

Thanks for your help guys. I now get to like PLG more again. NOW I understand what the Make UV Fast is for :D Helps alot with none Sub-D Objects.

Also watching tons of Blender UV videos I must say I like many of the Tools there and hope LW will finally get some UV love. The UV exporter in Blender is just a charm. Too bad LW still doesn't have a decent UV exporter and export as EPS doesn't always work best. Besides the EPS Importer still being tooooooo old.

I quit trying to UV my Models in Blender. Somehow I'm having .lwo Import errors with Blender 2.63, but what I did is try to convert the Blender UV Tuts to PLG and it works good. I like making UV's in LW again, but really would like an update to something powerful like Blender's UV tools, especially exporting UVs.

btw, you might wanna use UV imaginator in LW too ;]

Yeah I know that one, but there is no x64 version what sucks.

Thats one thing that sucks with closed source. Once the Dev stops you lose all. :(

erikals

yeah, the reason i stuck with 32bit...

you might wanna use 32bit instead though, 32 bit is faster unless you render "Transformers" in Layout.

in Modeler 32bit is always faster, and you won't go out of Ram. (so the smart LW people says)

Have you tried Headus?

http://www.uvlayout.com/

interface is a bit clunky, but good results..... I've been told.

erikals

bit expensive imo, for $200 you might just wanna add a couple of $ to get 3DCoat.
(though cannot say for sure how the two compare...)
looks nice though...

Headus UV Layout is the thing... But if don't UV map much and do simple UVs it's probably not worth it.
