Not too exciting, but I used clothFX for a minor effect in three shots for Gangster Squad, two of which briefly appear near the end of the trailer, where machine gun fire is ripping thru a movie screen.

The screen was shot on set with no holes. At first, an all 2D approach was tried, but the client wanted to see flaps wriggling so I was contacted to try it in LW.

I pre-tore subdivided cards in Modeler, and just rapidly passed a collision sphere thru center. I rendered 14 variations of a single bullet hole rip, each from a side, front and rear angle. I could not find a way to save out each of three LW camera views as three separate sequences, from the same scene render. There's a pay plug that I think allows it. I tried the CCTV thing, but alfas are opaque on the final display. So I had to setup and render 42 scenes instead of 14.

Brad Moylan, the compositor did most of the work, arranging and displacing the holes, and making long vertical rips.

Once again, I barely got cloth to work and almost gave up on it. Could not go over 2000 polys before sims would hang. Slight parameter changes caused unfixed polys to weirdly vanish. Self collision caused spastic behavior and hangs, so I was stuck with flaps passing back thru the screen, but the final shot is so brief, blurred and strobey, you cant tell, and the comper probably patched it up. And any secondary collision object added anywhere in the scene would cause a hang, even if nowhere near the cloth(?). Had to hope the client would not ask for any changes.

Very interesting Mr. Rid. Thanks for sharing. I'm always excited to hear about your work.

well, that's ClothFX...

i think it turned out very well though...
NT is currently working on Bullet Soft Bodies, hopefully it will be good...

...but again, great final result!

might have suggested it before,

ever considered Marvelous Designer?

looks to be King for certain tasks, not sure how accurate the self-collision is though...

hmm, maybe i should give it a go...

MD was next to try if I cant get Syflex to do what I want. The pain in Syflex is not being able to move or keyframe the cloth object without collisions screwing up, but mainly not being able to keyframe any values, particularly the wind. This is surprising considering it costs more than two LW licenses. For that price I would expect it to get you laid and make chocolate chip pancakes in the morning. Its fine for clothes on a figure, but am trying to use it for effects where it becomes tedious workaround time again. But its night and day compared to LW as far as speed and reliable collision. And the straightforward interface can be figured out without reading the docs. There is no reason why more apps cant have such intuitive simplicity. It should also have a range of solid presets so you can get right to it.

when writing the above i thought about mentioning Syflex, but like you said, it'll most likely get you into trouble.

yeah, i know :\ for that price...
but the truth is that it's a deformer, so i assume self-collision isn't a close friend. unfortunately.

i still wanna give MD a try, think it might be good.
shame it's not a LW plugin, but, oh-well... can't get it all it seems...

Another problem with all of the above is being too slow-motiony. I see this in most cloth demos, where most people dont notice at first. In attempt to match reference of wind-whipped cloth using Syflex, am exaggerating values right before the point of breaking the sim, but its still too sluggish. I see the same problem in every MD demo. Is ok for a lot of things, but am trying to get realism.

hm, yeah, guess things can tend to get a bit "rubbery"

btw, interesting read... MD and C4D

Thanks, I'll look that over. Those MD examples are what I mean by, not so much 'rubbery,' but looking kinda like its underwater or rather the scene is at a larger scale. Its curious how most people wont notice the issue until I point it out.

In LW its impossible to avoid having flexible objects like these flowers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmbUKgZd8As or leaves http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4iCtdFcJao lay down on the ground in slow motion the way they do.

I assume Gangster Squad's 'theater massacre' scene will be altered, after the Aurora CO theater shooting.

yeah, no good now... :/
