does anyone know if there is any way to speed this up?...
or is this indeed the fastest method?...

It will struggle where the geometry is angled like that, but I would do this with Multishift. Select loop - type in inset - select loop - type in inset etc. Save you duplicating your effort either side of the loop.

Can be done with 7 or 8 clicks or so using bandsaw pro.

Ahh but no. He is typing in specific values like '4cm' you can't do that with bandsaw or bandsaw pro. You can do it with Multishift though, albeit with the angle issues previously mentioned.

no, Bandsaw pro doesn't have millimeter offset, only percentage.

Multishift unfortunately only works good on parallel edges...

Yeah but you could do the edges that won't deform properly with your bandsaw EX, and the rest with Multishift. It would still be faster.

I go with Tobian here because Multishift you can just do both sides with millimeters and Quick Store the values. Plus, you can do it to several loops in one go, if they don't cross or neighbour each other.
But there are downsides. Some ares you want distances, others you want percentage with said distance, because angled sides will present this problem.

Personally I would rather have somthing like the Cinema 4D aproach, where you can select some edges and boom control edges. But with extensive options, since it will have the same issues on angled sides.

You could continue this one. I started with Edge Bevel. Still missing Shift, Inset and Chamfer :p

yes, no, i was going for accuracy on this one...

to my surprise though, looking again, it turns out Bandsaw EX has the same issue as Multishift when it comes to dealing with parallel lines...

Bandsaw Pro to the rescue... (see vid)
still, wish it was more accurate...

This is case for one of rare situations where Rounder kinda works ('coz there is no open edges) :).

1. Select all edges (lasoo or select connected)
2. Hit rounder and type in 0.02m as value
3. merge points and unify polys (i have no idea why does it create extra points/polys)
4. Hit TAB key

So? I told you, you need percentage in some places, distance in others. Later, I'll post the problems that arrive from this. Because on one hand you want the offset to be the same on every side, but on steep angles that fixesd offset can also present undesirable results when you have different surfaces. But the real issue are the in-between vertices and how to position them: Are they guided by one side or the other?

I'm super lazy, I just subdivide the crap out of everything and hit subpatch and then slide edges to tighten things up. Of course modeler doesn't have a native slide edge mode.

Have a couple of tips to speed things up (I'm sure they are well known, just going off of your initial vid example).

1) UNchecking "auto setting" in BandSawEX preserves the last setting used.
2) there is no need to "select loop" each time. Two polys selected in a row determines the loop direction (99.99999 % of the time. For me at least).
3) There is also no need to keep choosing left and right in BSEx (even with your last settings in place). The direction of poly selection determines which side the cut will take place. So selecting two polys lower to upper puts the cut on the right. Selecting upper to lower puts cut on the left.
left/right selection=bottom .... right/left selection=top.

Bunch of clicks and typing eliminated. :)

I like WEdge slide. I think that's what its called. I also remember seeing a new (orold) pluging that is a slice and slide fuction.

yeah not the most interactive of tools but it gets the job done in many circumstances.
