View Full Version : I don't understand this.

I made a spiral with the helix tool. If I make a circle with the disc tool, and use rail extrude, I get a good shape. Now if I make a somewhat custom shaped poly I get a real screwed up shape. When I make the custom shape I select the points one after another. so why the weird shape?

I'm guessing the object shape is twisting as it travels the length of the helix. It's not noticeable with the disc, but a custom shape is giving a weird result.

If that's the case I'm not sure what the answer is, other than ensuring it is correctly lined up at the start of the curve.

Use the lathe tool with an offset, increase the rotation past 360 and, "voila!" you have a helix.

What bilious said, I have never used the helix tool for this type of stuff and have used lathe extensively. The lathe tool won't twist your geometry.

Or use px_bezier plug.

I went a little nuts with the curl....left the custom shape so u could see.

I always use the lathe tool for things like this. Have never used the helix tool myself.

Yes, the lathe tool is definitely the way to go. Thanks works great!

also try minimizing the points in the spline as sometimes if points overlap will give odd results.

The helix tool is logarithmic...

LWM rail clone will do exactly the same thing... believe it or not:)

Have a look at Align to Rail script(s) too:

Erikals also did a video on it showing it in action:
