I'm using Lightwave 10 on OSX Lion. There seems to be pretty hard to import .3ds objects, as I can't click them, and the file dialog does not show a show all files option as on windows. Any ideas?

this is a pretty old issue.
Simpliest solution is to upgrade to 10.1. (which is freely available for all 10.0 users)

If you want/need to stay with the LW-build that you are using atm, you can fix it inside the Modeler10 prefs file by yourself (3ds import works in Layout).
A simple writing error in this file is causing the issue:

open the Modeler10 prefs file
("Your User Account"/Library/Application Support/NewTek/LightWave/10.0/Modeler10)
in a Text Editor of your choice (TextEdit, TextWrangler aso)
find the line where it says "FileType Objects" (should be line 16)
replace the commas between ,.3ds, .dae, .fbx with semikolons (; .3ds; .dxf; etc.) and save the file again as plain text file
you're done

As you most likely know, the User Library Folder in Lion is hidden by default.
The simpliest solution to make it visible is to use the "Go To" Menu in Finder and hold down the "alt" key.

Of course, you can do a backup of the file at first, you only need to be aware that you save as plain text and place the correct file in the correct location.
