Hi,

I'm just in the early stages of planning a new animation, and I am just knocking up things quickly to see if they are possible. This animation is dynamics based sadly, and one event I had planned was having a few rubber mallets, one upright at the top of them all. Then to have the top mallet swing naturally around its pivot and trigger another mallet, and so on... This sequence is popular with Rube Goldburg animations.

I just want to know how I get started dynamics wise, as I've never had something forced where the object swings and remains at its pivot point. Or, if it will be easier to animate them?

I have attached a picture of a basic mallet structure:

Thanks

I don't think bullet in LightWave has constraints yet. You'd want to set up a hinge if it did.

My instinct with something like this is to simply keframe it for more control.

There are two other things you could look into:

hardlink - where you could use cloth dynamics on a 2 point poly chain.

IKboost bone dynamics.

Both would have to be st up and rigged to work just so... and then I come back to faster more reliable to just key frame it.

There might be other ideas I have not thought of though.

Bullet will do this. :)
Drill a hole in your handle, and then model a cylinder as your pivot.

Cheers guys, wow your rubber mallet looks good, thats the effect I would love but sadly... I should of mentioned, I', still using 10.1 for the mac :( so will have to make doo for this uni project unless there's beta or release for the mac. But yes, I think keyframing it will have to do. Thats exactly what I had in mind tho before watching your you tube clip, I wanted a few of them to hit each other then the last one hit a ball, gutted.

I didn't think Bullet did soft bodies? how have you made the hammer head bouncy?
