For no particular reason at all, I decided to start this thread...

what movie poster/posters do you fancy, or find to be the best of them all.
interesting to hear why, and what criteria it should fill etc.

Heres a sample..

This one isn't the best, but when I was a kid it used to scare me, so it's stuck with me all these years later.

Those painted posters had a certain charm compared to many photo shots with a couple of guys standing in front and back of each other with a gun looking like cool dudes.

heres some oldies I liked too..
Star wars (nice composition of the items)

Interesting..thanks.

Heres another in my mind iconic poster, a pretty girl and and a moth...shouldnīt be that scary, but it gives me the chill.

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2923739648/tt0102926

moth is of course strategicly placed over the mouth, to emphesis silence, or the theme of clariceīs hope of stopping the screams from slaughtered spring lambs.

Those are COOL.

Were they used in the U.S? Both book covers and movie posters from Europe always seem more interesting and nuanced to me than their US counterparts.

the Blade Runner one is a mess, American movie posters are to a strictly by the numbers , there's the hero looking mean and cool, the heroin looking hot (which tends to explain why she's usually half out of her dress) and some cool machine/piece of tech and or some sort explosion/lens flare blinding light sauce. Also the depiction of Ford is incompetent and badly drawn, however some people can manage to distill an idea into something better and put it on a sheet of paper in a way that is interesting.

Well..obviously two different tastes here, the murder poster is not of my liking, donīt see any interesting or aestethicly with it.

Taking a look at blade runner poster again..

the images in portraited in the poster is actually derrived from the film scenes, so I do not understand your critics looking cool hero, and hot heroinie, I do not find any cool about him there, neither hot with sean young, sheīs just smoking(hot) as in the voight kampf test.
and half out of the dress?..donīt know what youré talking about.

Some sort of explosion? where? lensflares..well it kind of looked like that in the movie you know?
the flaring light behind harrison is actually strong emphasis of the strong light passing through windows blinds a lot in the film.

I might agree about harrison ford not being very portrait like, but in the movie he looked kind of weird in many shots, but it is absolutly not badly drawn.. I like the composition and the colors.

Anyone else disliking blade runner poster?

I'm not crazy about it. I always thought those buildings looked a lot like the starships on the classic paperback cover of "Downbelow Station" --which is good. The composition is strictly community college level design.

There's one poster artist who's signature 'move' is a triangular collage of the actor's faces, usually with a base of some group of people. I thought s/he'd done "Beyond Thunderdome", but either I was wrong or just couldn't find it.

I like those posters.

I was generalising when referring to American movie posters being by the numbers but yes I did mean the Blade Runner one was in that vein though not specifically, it looked like it was thrown together crassly by the marketing department and looks chaotic much like the movie production was itself

Ahh..nice, Havenīt seen the second trailer of prometheus, visually appealing yes, hope the story, acting, editing holds up as well.

Im tuning down the expectations thou, Hard to set a new standard or deliver something chocking or wow moments in the scifi theme today, just hoping for a decent movie.

regarding the two prometheus posters, well the first is nice, but I think Ivé kind of seen quite a few similar looks to that poster, the second might be better.
