am i right in thinking that you have to use bitmap images for projector lights?, in that i mean ,jpg,avi,mov,tga etc..
you can't use precedual textures in the projector lights...or gradients from the surface editor for example...

the reason is i'd like to use noise to make a caustic map for use in a light...s'pose i could render a seq of images out in a separate scene then use those but if you can use proc textures how do you go about it?

As far as I know your right, only file textures can be used. My be some kind of script or plug to change this though?

Well, there is a workaround:
Load an image of any size.
Got to the image editor, in the processing tab you can add, amongst others, the "Textured Filter".
If you activate animate values you can create animated procedurals.
I would recommend rendering them out to image files though (assign the image as the backdrop in an empty scene, adjust the camera res to the image size, render away), since this workaround can be computationally expensive.
