Hi everyone,

This is probably coming a bit late and I apologize, but since Kurv shut down I've been asked if I can make my node training available again. It's taken me a while to get around to it but it's been repackaged and is available once more from Liberty3D.

http://www.liberty3d.com/2012/03/node-based-surfacing-video/

The content is much the same, so don't get this if you already have the Kurv DVD ( though if you do have the DVD I would appreciate if you could drop me a line and let me know, just for accounting purposes )
Because of the age of the material, and we're using an online delivery system, all 3 hours are available for just $10.

Great! Will there be a 2nd video? In the first one you mention covering more in a 2nd training dvd.

Yes, though there is a heck of a lot to consider now. I've still got the list from last time we mentioned a second dvd, but I'd like to cover all the new material shaders in nodal next time too...

(bought)

absolutely, a second version would be great...
(for us node-dummies)

(edit; file has problem with sound in my VLC version, works good in Quicktime)

Have really slow download issues... 350MB for part 1 is saying 4 hours! How long do I have before the download links expire?

I had no trouble downloading the files, but seem to require assistance extracting them.

I use Windows 7 64x, and through Windows Explorer double-clicked on a zip file with the original name. It gave me an error message indicating windows is unable to open the file, so I renamed it so it had just the .zip extension and got the same error (on all 3 files).

I re-downloaded each with FlashGet, and was able to extract 001 using 7-Zip, but the other two new downloads give me the same error message.

Errrmmm, wonder if it's because I'm over the pond. Will check and try to download again.

How big was the file extracted from 001 by 7-Zip? It should have automatically included the other two sections and produced a file about 1.25 Gig. If so, you're done!

I split the file up with 7-Zip, so 7-Zip should be able to recombine them all. PLease let me know if you're having trouble and we'll get it fixed asap...

Would a single massive file be better than three smaller ones?

Hi James,

I had purchased the DVD a few years ago. It was a great intro to LW nodes and helped me greatly at the time. I'll look forward to any new videos you produce.

Try using 7-zip? Failing that, HJSplit can combine them too.

To all folks having trouble recombining, I'm dreadfully sorry about that, we'll do what we can to get the video working, and if anyone else has a particular workflow they used to successfully extract the file please post the steps here for others to follow!

James, HJSplit worked for me! I appreciate your help with this, looking forword to part two of your node based surfacing tutorial. Thanks again for your help.

I intend to buy the video myself. I'd say again, but I know you didn't make ANYTHING from the OTHER video, so I'm happy to toss a tenner to you for your AMAZING work.

And to encourage you to do more... ;-)

RANTMODE ON

Here is a suggestion; Use RAR instead of ZIP... RAR allows you to split the archive into any pre-defined size per file and be gone with the problem.

RAR exists for Windows, MacOS, Linux and FreeBSD. It is also free to download and use. There is a reason why it is a VERY popular format within the Warez-community; it works!

Can't get the files to extract after downloading.

Edit: I was finally able to get the file extracting. Don't ask me how I can't remember. :)
Once I opened in QuickTime, I got no sound. However, I opened them with ITunes and go the whole package of sound and images.

It's one movie, over 3 hours 50 something minutes - hope that's the way it is supposed to be.

Watching it now.

Thanks! I was a node-based idiot - this should help me along with my Lightwave3D node eduction. heh

Hey Gang,
I'm on a late 2011 17" MBP, Lion 10.7.3.
Used Stuffit Expander v15.0.4 on the two rar's (314.6MB, 300.2MB) which yielded a single 1.28GB .mov file at a duration of 03:58:21. Plays fine in both Quicktime 7.6.6 & 10.1. Thanks James for bringing this title back, never had the opportunity to purchase way back when.

At around 2:11:14, as the Layer vs Node Bricks lesson ends and the new Bricks lesson begins, it seems to be missing a major chuck of the beginning. James, can you check the editing on this video? Can anyone confirm my findings?

You're right of course :-) At such a low price one thing that seems to be happening is the number of niggling questions James has been getting. There must come a point at which the time you spend solving user problems costs you more than you're making from those users!

Hi, I am interested in these videos and am really interested in node textures. My question is How large are the changes from version 9 to lightwave 11? I have seen a few videos on our video tuts page and they are from 9 and there are some points that are not the same.

Thanks

11 has a few more nodes than 9 but the point of the video is not to go through each and every node telling you how it works, but to try and explain how to think 'nodally' so you can work out what to hook up where. without being too specific. The philosphy remains the same regardless of what actual nodes you use so the techniques in the video are applicable to node based motion, node based image filters, and even utilizing third party nodes.

The BEST thing about 11 is the VPR for surface previews. Inthe video I had to condtend with VIPER, but with VPR you get a pretty accurate preview of the final surface... I highly recommend the upgrade for VPR alone! ( Instancing is another must-have feature in my view too btw )

James: all sorted now. Using 7-zip recompiles the split files into one .mov

I had to play it through Itunes to get the sound to work.

Well worth the money.

Hey James,

I have a copy of the Kurv DVD, was really helpful at the time.

While I do love the immediacy of downloads, I do enjoy going to my shelf and checking my bought materials. I knda enjoyed just checking the shelf to see if it was your disc I had, picking it up and checking it out :)

Might be worth offering a DVD version for say $17.50 including postage. Drop me a PM if you want and I can show you how to very easily deal with DVD orders on demand, better quality print than Kurv used to have too.

Cheers,
Dom

Actually, that seems to be correct. I just checked my video and at the end of it James mentions what part 2 will be about, yet there's no part 2 it seems. I only got links to part 1 and part 2 and extracted these together to get the video.
