It appears that Lightwave and modo were used to make this action packed short film. Lightwave used for the animation work and then brought into modo for final surfacing and rendering via FBX. A video of the bike rig is demoed in Lightwave at the bottom of the page. Check it out!

Extremely (emphasis on EXTREMELY) well done!

Hopefully we'll get more info on the animation in LW and rendering in Modo. Curious about the hair too. :)

Beautiful, awesome, and lovely all round... All that foliage, just wtf, that blows me away thinking about putting all that together.

So glad too to see such a wonderful piece done with a RHiggit rig.

Wow! I am impressed.Very inspiring... Excellent animation! The environment is phenomenal. I wonder on what computers are rendered all this? Realy love this kind of apocalyptic animations:)

just ******* amazing. Nice to se a Lightwave Modo show off. I properly have to look into Modo again :)

This is so awesomely done.

Probably a question for Wes Ball & the creators. But how is a laborious short like this monetized? It's a *lot* of work to just be a reel or showpiece. Shorts seem pointless unless there's enough traction to get millions of YouTube hits or you are seriously going for an Oscar or something. Again, not a criticism, but just curious as to why it was made (other than love for animation or the story). I guess if assets/rigs etc are being created for a series or a film, then that makes sense.... just curious about the business side of such an endeavor.

There is no question in my mind that this could have been rendered in Lightwave and looked just as good but I would guess he may have chosen to use modo at the time because of replicators and some of the options that go along with them may have made some things easier to do. LW11 now has fairly robust native instancing though.

just curious as to why it was made...

Probably to get chicks :D

I think my post I just did on Facebook shows how much I liked this short:

Speechless. Now this is a short film!
- Amazing Soundtrack
- Amazing Set Design (animation)
- Amazing Camerawork
- Brilliant SFX
- The Soundtrack!

That was incredible.

Los Angeles modo User Group meeting on January 14th, held at the HQ of Scott Robertson & Neville Page. Wes Ball goes through his workflow during the production of his short film, RUIN. An awesome piece of work which was enjoyed thoroughly by the users. He talked about challenges & surprises during his production.

Here's a very cool video where they talk about the production of the film. :D

I want more!!!!

Let's do something like this, I am game, I'll do the cars and vehicles, driving and camera work. If others can do the landscape, character design and animation, and explosions, we'd have a hit...

I bet Lightwave was used because of RH rig. :)
I also bet that MODO ver. was a previous “6.01" version, else... you know what I mean. :D

mind blowing! I also see they used Turbulence for the effects. Nice!

03-19-2012, 02:54 PM
It was very nice. Two years of work, though...

03-19-2012, 05:36 PM
Ok, they give credit like a dozen people for music, and one for animation. That's weird, considering the amount of work. I like it.

Better than most action movies. A fine setup for a feature, series, or game.

Am also wondering how their time was financed.

A question that also crossed my mind.
