View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge #163 Beetle.

03-15-2012, 01:33 PM
Speed Modelling Challenge #163 Beetle.

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.

This week's topic is: Beetle. As mentioned in the previous thread and also from the one before. Can you model a beetle in an hour? I will accept a full on car :-) , a robotic alien one, just a small ladybird or even a squashed one if that floats your boat (You know who you are ;-D). Most important.... have fun with it.

Time limit: 60min.
Deadline: Wed. 21th march 2012. 22:00 G.M.T

Modeling 40min, texturing/lightning 35min.

Nice "bugs" girl/guy. :D

03-19-2012, 02:00 PM
Thanks JoePoe. :)

Love the beatles akaracquel.

Im curious..what shading, material did you use? for the nice color spectrum wich is caused by the transparent high refraction index in kitin for colorful bugs I suspect?

pretty sweet Xswamp and MD!

....uh, not sure what this thing is, rof.... posting anyway. (overtime by 15).

03-19-2012, 02:33 PM
sick topic sick renders , may give this one a whirl

03-19-2012, 02:34 PM
That would be.... 10% reflection blur, and 1000% dispersion!

03-19-2012, 08:53 PM
well, sort of.... I'm just not that fast :bangwall:.... 1.5hr model 45 min surface.

03-19-2012, 08:58 PM
Well done with including the bumpy bits & spurs on the legs Joe Poe! Thanks for the pointer on dispersion XswampyX :)

..... and, thanks so much for the nice comments.:)

Since I was overtime I didn't post a wireframe, but now I'm thinking what the hey - (ya'll seem to like the little guy)... and it'll give the challenge a last minute bump up.

The great thing about math... I may have been a full 50% over the time allotment, but I only need to improve by 33% to get it in on time!! :screwy:

Probiner - your avatar is freakin' me out. Now when I see your name I think "Probe In Air".:D

Tick tock.... Tick Tock ...... Barrrrrrppp!

Times up!

Some great entries again, well done everyone.

akaracquel - Beatle. Well the brief said 'have fun' and you certainly did and a great one to start off with. Good modelling for what's an intricate design. My favourite render, It made me smile.
akaracquel - Beetle. The modern classic with a retro design. Fits in beautifully with the previous model. Could do with some more edge loops and a couple of bridged polys to bring the mesh together. The hand gesture is perfect.
MDSPECIFIC - RHINO beetle. Hey that's my avatar! Great modelling again, love the leathery texture on the armour.
JoePoe - Micro Machine Beetle? Pretty cool design. You could drive, walk and fly to work in that. No wires and over time so disqualified.
JoePoe - Green bug. Thanks for posting the wires. They look great! Well worth the extra 50%. Nice render/texturing as well. Great job.
probiner - Humblebug. The only one modelled with wings, Good wires, was he made with splines? Love the antenna and his cute little face.
Iain - Beetlered. Nice one, Love the feet and the little nodules on his head, very efficient modelling. He looks a bit sad.

And the winner is......

Iain- For beetlered - Great detailing on the model.

Ah cool, thank you :D

I wouldn't have stood a chance if all the entries were under time!

Great standard of modelling throughout.

Congratulations :king: Iain!!

(got my fingers crossed for a five hour time limit ..... just kidding!)

03-22-2012, 09:06 AM
Congrats Iain!!!
XswampyX, I didn't know that. :D

Hi there all you buggers:) and Xswampy..

I noticed that the latest Lw 11 version has an improved carpaint with iridescence, wavelength and thickness so color changes with viewing angle as seen on soapbubbles and sea shells and bugs.

check latest LW addendum and carpaint.

You could otherwise use high value of refraction dispersion as Xswampy has shown here on some images.
