6 Bleeps and Feck!

Today my trusty Dell Workstation bleeped at me repeatedly signalling that it's probably deceased. :(

So I'm wondering if I should send it to repair centre or just buy a replacement?

Does anyone know what kind of chip(s) I would need to have installed to get at least the same performance as the Dell that had dual E5420's?

Thanks for any insights.

Any current, single i7 chip will compete with those two. As a guide, I have a BOXX with two 1.86ghz Xeons from the same line as yours and my i7 920 based workstation and 920 based render nodes out-perform it when rendering by approx. 10% but are much, much faster with single threaded tasks...and they run quieter, cooler and cheaper.

Thanks - that's worth knowing. I think I'm going to buy a new one, perhaps something with an i7 3930k in it.

My i7 940 OC a touch on average renders about the same speed as my pair of E5450 CPU. It's not worth spending any money on the old box, get the 3930 as you suggested.

Link to a bit of current CPU info...

It's pleasantly surprising the current crop of CPU's are so much quicker. I suppose it might still be worth trying to get the old Dell fixed later, so I can use it as a render box...

Lol! I feel like a grandad with my Dual Xeon Dell Precision 650 from 2004. :)
