I have stl files generated from surface scans that are about 20k to 50k trinagles. Whether or not I convert them to lwo files in Rhino, they still take a very long time to load (more than 15 minutes) and once loaded, are extremely sluggish to work with. One stl file is about 1.7 MB and the resulting lwo file is 4.6 MB. Is this about correct? Any tips for working with stl files?

when I turn off shading in the perspective viewport, LW becomes snappy again, but I need shading so I can see the effects of what I'm doing:( any ideas? I have a good video card so that's not the problem, and 1.5 GB of ram...

try merging points, I know DXF / OBJ formats out of Rhino have double the number of points than needed, can't remember whether Rhinos LWO export does it for you, if not try it it will speed up no end!
