Looks brilliant to me, they've basically taken the 5D MK2, upgraded most of the components with parts from the 1D-X and put it in a 7D body...then they've added dual card slots, in-camera HDR and a few other subtle tweaks.

I was waiting to upgrade my canon 7d to 5D mark III. At the end I sold it to fund my coming Nikon d800 purchase. Glad I did it. 5D mark III is quite a disappointment.

And... when is it out and... how much it will cost?

How so?

I'll be interested to see a side by side comparison of the two but, for me, it looks like a really solid upgrade. Rather than cram in gimmicks they've upgraded an already brilliant camera.

They are available for pre-order at 2999/$3499 (body only). I'll probably wait 6 months-1 year before I get one, the prices should have dropped quite a bit by then.

I owned a canon 7D and naturally my next upgrade will be 5D FX body. While I'm waiting for 5D mark III to launch. The much speculated Nikon D800 launched on 6 Feb 2012 to replace D700. And true to the rumor it came with 36.3 mega pixel with video capability. D700 was on the market for 4 years It was long overdue for replacement. Without much hesitation I sold all my canon body, lenses and speedlite to cash out for D800. Now I'm waiting for Nikon D800 to be shipped here. Here's the comparison between it predecessor D700.

I'm glad I did that after seeing the specs for 5D mark III is merely some bumped improvement as compare to Nikon D700 to D800.

That doesn't really make sense though, you think that the D800 is better than the 5Dmk3 because the D700 wasn't very good?

I agree that the 5Dmk3 doesn't add a lot of features over the mk2 but it didn't really need much. The features which have been added are very good but they aren't the kind of features which grab headlines, improvements to the ergonomics and focussing seem like quite trivial things but, for a professional photographer, they are a vast improvement. The higher resolution of the D800 sounds great but I've never needed anything higher than my 21mp, even after aggressive cropping and large prints.

I'm not saying that the D800 isn't a great camera, I was just curious why you feel that it's a better camera?

BTW, you know that some of the footage used to sell the D800's video capabilities was filmed on a 5Dmk2? http://www.steves-digicams.com/news/whoops_nikon_uses_canon_dslr_footage_to_launch_d80 0.html#b

It's true that the specs improvement from D700 to D800 is a lot more as to 5DII to 5DIII. But I did not say that D700 is no good nor 5D mark III is. In fact some 5DIII specs beat D800. IMO the 5dIII pixel difference isn't that great. I'm just expecting higher pixel for my next camera upgrade. And I'm glad that I made that decision to sell away my stuff and get something that I have been waiting for. People may find 22 mega pixel more than enough but not for me. I downloaded and check out the sample pictures took by D800 and utterly impressed by it. Call it a poor's man medium format camera perhaps but it suit my needs. As for the video is a bonus to have.
